| I am thinking about getting a 1999-2002 Lighting in a month or so. Something that I have wanted since I was 16. the question is any of you drive one and if so, have you had to do any work to the supercharger? as in, most of the ones for sell have anywhere from 40-90K on them in miles, and I am wondering how the supercharger holds up. |
| well from what I have found so far is....either the truck was hardly driven by an older guy....normally they are asking about 20K.....or some kid had it and done who knows what to it and they are around 13K......engine overhaul is not that big a concern to me....but if they have screwed up the SC on it, that can be about 3 grand to fix.. |

go to nationallightningownersclub it is a forum, tons of shit I got the pillar, with 3 pods, PSI/TEMP/Mixture ratio. I did the boost bypass, upgraded the plenum, forced in intake (the "cool air intake" only sucks air in from the hot engine), single blade throttle body, upgraded the exhaust, put a 8LB lower pulley, went from 10 to 18 LBS, added another 2lb upper puller, upgraded FTVB, oil breather cap (BLING), a BUNCH more shit, I can't remember... I would easily smoke corvettes, mustang GT, camero SS, any ricer, I had the fasted car in the surrounding 12 schools, every Friday was street race night, and OH boy did, , (I was stupid and young) Right when I turned 16, I got a 21point ticket, for racing, speeding, and running the stop sign, my dad got me a lawyer and I was charged 100$ and 0 points, then when I upgraded my pulley, my truck just got a ton faster, then I got another ticket, I have a bunch of stock parts too, stuff that I had replaced. I have a predator tuner, If you want PM me, I can send it to you for free, I sold my lighting a couple years ago, and my dad got me a 09 F350 Erick. |

I have a bunch of stock parts too, stuff that I had replaced. I had a friend a fast Lighting (new SC, nitrous, everything...) and was used to just ignoring cops and outrunning everything. Until one day he hit traffic at a toll plaza. So he just pulled over and 3 minutes later the cop caught up. Got the muzzle of a Sig pressed to the side of his head. Lightning, good. Running from the cops when you're not on a motorcycle, bad. |

| I had a 02 loved it. The dont buy a used tuner it wont work, they can only program one computer, not multiple. If you get above around 450 rw/hp you run the risk of breaking a rod. Up the boost too much and live in a colder climate you will break a rod. The thread issue on the heads it debatable. They are fast but traction is tricky off the line. Tires aren't cheap they are a odd size 295/45-18 if I remember correctly. You are correct either they are beat to shit or never driven. There is a ton of info online. |

I had an '01 with some bolt-ons, (intake, pullies, exhaust, ECU re-programmed) and after about 19,000 miles the trans died. Ford took care of it, but it was still a PITA. It would get out it's own way, and it shifted nice and hard, but I guess the trans couldn't take it. From what I remember, Ford didn't really beef them up.

Dunno about you, but a blower, bigger rear axle, locker, and beefed up transmission in my Silverado would fucking ROCK for towing my 21' trailer through the tough grades going to Bear Lake. What about 3/4 ton diesels that come with 700ft-lbs torque stock? Does that just defeat the purpose of a truck, having that much power? |

Some of the earlier Dodge Ram SRT10s also were automatic xmission only. I never understood that either. actually the original srt10's were all manuals people complained and then they came out with the auto in the extended cab version. Alot of viper guys wanted the truck to tow their race vipers with but the manual trans trucks were not rated for it. |

From what I remember, Ford didn't really beef them up. ![]() sounds more like whoever tuned your truck jacked the line pressure way up and killed the tranny....ive got a VB and never had one ounce of problem. the trannys is a 4r100 and is even built better than the turbo diesel varient. they will handle alot of power out the box.... never seen a lightning on the track have you? their suspension is not the same as an f-150...and yes ive got video of one beating a 911 at seabring and another whoping an evo at watkins glenn. For the record I own an 04 number 890 of 3781. I picked it up with 16k on the clock she now has barely rolled 50k, ive done 6# lower, TR-6's, Accufab Single blade TB, C&L elbow, APS sheetmetal Plenum, Magnum Powers Blower, Chickenears Cool-Aid, Custom Dynomax catback, DMP VB, Custom SCT X3 tune...she is my DD and gets raced every weekend. I agree, that's a very nice truck, but you are missing my point. Take the same amount of time and money and put it into a 2003 Mustang Cobra. Simple physics tells you it will be faster than your truck. If you are looking for performance you are handicapping yourself with a truck. There is no way the truck will perform better than the car that is way lower and way lighter, and you can get a shit-ton of power out of the Mustang too.
For the guy who said he needed a truck to move his football gear, look at the pics of the truck's interior. There is less room in there than inside my Corvette. If you put stuff in the bed it will fly out if you use any of the Lightning's performance. |

Which one will be quicker, faster, and handle better?
Your one-to-one race comparisons aren't universal either. I have seen a Honda Civic beat Lightnings, ZR-1s, Z06s, etc. It doesn't mean all Civics are faster that all Lightnings or Vettes. Just because you have seen one particular Lightning beat a particular whatever doesn't mean all lightnings are faster than all vettes, 911s, etc. |

Let me lay it out for you one last time. Take a car with 600 hp that weighs 3500lbs. Take a truck with 600 hp that weighs 5000 lb and has a center of mass 12 to 18 inches higher. Which one will be quicker, faster, and handle better? Your one-to-one race comparisons aren't universal either. I have seen a Honda Civic beat Lightnings, ZR-1s, Z06s, etc. It doesn't mean all Civics are faster that all Lightnings or Vettes. Just because you have seen one particular Lightning beat a particular whatever doesn't mean all lightnings are faster than all vettes, 911s, etc. Nobody's arguing with you that 600hp in a car is going to be faster than 600hp in a truck. We're truckers, not idiots. However, you can't argue that a 600hp 4x4 half-ton isn't bad ass. Blow away some cars at the track, then pull the camper and boat out to the lake, then the bikes to the dunes, then romp around on some backroad trails while looking for a shooting spot. An extra ton in weight does not offset the infinite utility that the truck will give you, in conjunction with how fucking fun it is to have a fast vehicle––whether it's a truck or a car. ^Above reference is not made to Lightnings specifically, just fast trucks. They're not 4x4.

You will have trouble going down a dirt road and definitely not be doing any off roading in that thing. I'm pretty sure that you will frag your highly strung motor and trans towing anything significant with a high performance truck too. These are not work trucks! IIRC the Lightning is only rated to tow 1000 or 1500 lbs from the factory, about the same as a FWD sedan. Again, you guys are missing my point. By modifying the truck to be fast, you are removing its ability to act like a truck. You now have a vehicle that sucks off road, can only tow light weights or none at all and is still inferior in performance to a comparable car. It's like taking a ford focus and putting 33" tires and saying what a great truck you have. You guys would say why didn't you just buy a truck if you wanted a truck? |
