Will be finished with (medical) basic at the end of March and want to go to jump school. I was told that I have to do that first before going to other training schools. I don't really need jump school but want to get as much field/tactical training as I can.
Where do I go? Fort Benning GA What other training should I go to? What else is available? |

I assume you are Army. If someone is offering you the chance to go to Airborne school....GO! In some circles, nobody takes you seriously if you are a "leg." A pair of jump wings says so much about a young troop. They also open some other doors. Air Assault is not bad, either. If you are a medic, let everyone in your chain of command know you want to do the EFMB certification. If it looks like you might get to test for that badge, start studying everything: the medical tasks, the soldier tasks, etc, and start working out for it. Ask if you can go to the GAFEB (German Armed Forces Efficiency Badge).
But don't focus on just the schools....don't become known as a "badge-finder, not a Pathfinder." Constantly improve yourself. You will never have the energy of your youth again. You can waste it on video games, getting drunk, and watching re-runs, or you can use that extra hour or two of energy and concentration that you will not have five or ten years from now to do some college courses, earn a civilian LPN degree/EMT certification, learn a foreign language, complete some Army correspondence courses, take skydiving courses, earn a private pilot's llcense, read books to the blind, whatever. Let your barracks buddies waste that hour a day. You should putting as many tools in your "tool kit" as you can. If you decide you still want to be a Soldier five years ago, you can. If you don't, you will have used the opportunity to do whatever you want with your life. I'm not saying that you should not have fun. I am saying that when you do have fun, make sure it is quality fun. Sitting in some crummy barracks shooting the sh@t with kids who are no smarter than you while you eat potato chips and watch American Idol is stupid fun. Getting off base when you are assigned overseas and learning about new cultures (maybe getting yourself a foreign girlfriend) is smart fun. |
| I'm not sure I can make it through jump school at 39 years old. I want to get as much tactical or field training as I can. Are there any other schools that I can go to? I don't want to do anything medical for drill because I do it all the time at work. I plan on getting deployed later this year and will do lots of medicine then but for now I want to get as much tactical/fieldl training as I can. Any advise would help. |

Don't miss out on jump school. You must give it your best shot. You'd be a fool not to take full advantage of an opportunity like that. Chump school is not difficult, by the way (petite women graduate). Being in an airborne unit is the real ass kicker - so don't sweat it.

Anybody got the inside to get me in... I am just snow-birding (sitting around and doing nothing) at Fort Leonard Wood till my school starts in May. I have been begging to get into different schools, particularly back to Benning for Airborne school. I don't understand why the Army wouldn't send me to other schools while I am literally doing nothing productive for the Army. if you get a slot in the school... TAKE IT WHILE YOU CAN |

I went through when I was 18yo. I could go through today. I am an average Arfcommer, except I know I could do it again. If I can, you can. It is a three week commitment, that if you have the fortitude of a 17 yo girl you can take a badge away that will stay on your uniform until you die. Get your wings. (I have been out of any type of loop for 20 years, and I have no doubt that I could run through jump school again). |

28 years ago I joined the Army. I went in as an 11B, took jump out of basic, went to Hunter AAF and the 1/75 Ranger Batt and Ranger school. I then got sent to the 101st Ft. Campbell and Air Assault school. I took a crap load of classes while there, including driving, field sanitation, Recondo, Jungle Warfare in Panama. I also got to attend MTU (Marksmanship Training Unit) while there. We even got to do beach assaults from Army landing craft while at Puerto Rico for a deployment. My unit also got to do a rotation at USMA West Point to train "cadidiots" (that's what we called them) and I ran the basic rifle course. So I know that a whole class of butterbars can actually shoot an M16. Take whatever classes you can. I took corespondence courses my first few years. I even learned to fire 81mm mortors and the ADA 20mm Vulcan cannons. I spent my last month doing OJT as an MP, but they denied me reenlistment as an MP, so I got out after 4. Wished I stayed in now. |

Knew a two star general of infantry once. Korea, three tours in Viet Nam, senior Army Aviator. He told me at one time that among his regrets was not going to jump school. Now, I don't know how it hurt his career, if at all .......... but he did have that regret. Go for it!

5 miles in 40 minutes. You trot at a nice, slow 8 minute mile. You'll be able to do that by the time you finish basic and AIT. However, you do sound somewhat like a defeatist so maybe it would be best to save that slot for someone who will put it to good use and not fall out / drop out / quit. You are coming up with reasons to avoid jump school. That's enough to convince me you don't have the ncessary drive to earn your wings. I agree with you - get rid of that jump school slot and find something else to do.
Good luck in 68J school and thank you for serving our country. I really do mean that. I appreciate everyone's military service. |

Not too terrible, but not easy. |

Group runs. Allowed to not make 2. PT Test...get at the front of the line for the run. They'll stop you on PU/SU as soon as you hit the numbers. Do 50PU with chest to the ground and be done with it. It's not bad...is surreal the first time that door opens, though. |

Quoted: He makes up for it with sparkling personality.... sometimes. Quoted: Quoted: I never went to jump school, but I did go through air assault course. Totally different. If I had to do it all over again I should have did the jump school. +1 One of the very few regrets I have in life. 7M3 is a LEG? Say it aint SO?! ![]() ![]() |

We don't accept dudes that wear Glock t-shirts at BAC. ![]() Glocks are awesome guns. I'd take one over an M9 anyday If its not going to help going to jump school I wont go. But, I like doing as much training as I can. You never know when you're going to have to jump from a plane. I would hope that they would let me take part in field operations but as a critical war time specialist they'll probably keep me in a bunker 2 stories below ground. |
