I've got a friend that is leaving for the Navy in August next year.
His job is going to be Master at Arms. I'm pretty sure his recruiter is full of BS
like most recruiters. My friend seems to think he won't be getting deployed.
I don't know much about the Navy or the reserves but I would think being
Master at Arms he will be deployed soon after he gets out of A-school.

Recruiters can "guarantee" exactly NOTHING.

The Navy is always deployed, peace or war.

One of my good friends is a USN Reserve Master at Arms.  He should be back next month from a year in Kuwait.

Master At Arms get assigned to ships just like everyone else at least when I was in. From my recolection you couldn't be a rated MAA until you picked up E-5 but that may have changed also.

MAs deploy like a mofo.

They were among the first to get called up right after 9/11.

I hope he like watching guys pee, too.

This.  Your friend that you now know, won't be the same when he gets back.  Meat gazing steals their souls.

He has a history degree but GPA too low for OCS.
He also got a 94 on the ASVAB
He is getting married in July.
This is what he's been told so far.

He is trying to get a GS supply job so the recruiter said "your best bet for getting a gov job is to be a cop"
Your E-3 BAH will be $1600 a month. (I get E-5 with dependants and its $1000)
Your $10,000 sign on bonus will be taxed at 20% (I don't think the IRS would agree with that)
You get E-3 as soon as you leave
You can apply to be an officer after 6 months and should have no problem getting it
If you do get called up its tax free (I thought it was only in the desert)
....and I'm sure there is a lot more

Has he tried looking at other branches of service?  If he has a degree that last thing he should do is enlist in the military to stare at other guys dicks while drug testing.  Of course if your buddy likes that sort of thing, well then he may be happy.

No shit....

I joined the Navy to see the world

Problem is the world is mostly water.

I saw an awful lot of water

Why doesn't he commission into a branch with no GPA requirements?  Try the Guard.

I've tried to tell him but he won't listen to me. He believes the recruiter over me.
I'm not against him leaving, he just should realize what he's getting into.

Fuck that shit, if he's dumb enough to eat up the BS the recruiter is feeding him I don't want him anywhere near combat troops, especially in an officer position where you can get better men killed just by hesitating.
He should be so lucky as to stare down cock for the next several years...with stupidity like that.

You know the "elite" need help too from time to time..... I think supply would be ideal.

Pretty sure he will get E-3 after boot(Navy has boot right?) if he has a college degree(at least the Army and CG do it). I gotta call BS on the rest of that though.

I wish I would have had someone to talk to before I went to the recruiter. I would have played hardball for the job I wanted, instead of falling for that "We don't have any billets open in that" BS.

Sometimes it's true.  Crappy recruiters piss me off.

A lot of fate depends on if he gets a billet with a unit that is not deployed, or if he is just lumped into a big pool of people that they want to grab Individual Agumentees from.

The former is a lot less likely to get deployed away from his unit.

I see you are from Ohio.  If he will be drilling in Columbus, that means he will be in an embarked security unit.  He will deploy.  Seriously, how can a person be so stupid as to join the US military at this time and really think they will never deploy?
1/12/2010 5:41:01 AM EDT

I think he said he will be at Rickenbacker but I didn't know they had Navy reserve there.

Let's see....I'm working in the G-8 shop of the Minnesota National Guard's 34th Infantry Division.

Guess how many Navy Reserve pax are sitting within spitting distance of me right now.

(Hint:  It's more than 2)

He's deploying.  If he's lucky he'll be on a boat.  If he's not lucky, he might be in the cube next to me.

What?  He thought they'd be working IN their specialty???
1/12/2010 6:41:28 AM EDT
[#23]
You friend will probably be deployed soon after recruit training and his specialty school.  Members in the MA rating serve at virtually all types of commands, afloat and ashore.

If you friend does not wish to deploy, he ought not be enlisting in the Navy.

I went in the army with a degree and was given E-4.  That was bad enough. I wouldn't have done it for e-3 or lower...
