Yes they work.  They are no Dyson, but they do pick up a lot, and you don't have to do any of the work.

Do they run all the time, or just at set times of the day then go back to "home base" to charge?

I like mine.  But I am a bachelor and hate vacuuming.
As far as what they can do, depends on the model.
I got the middle cost version.  Have to tell it to vacuum and then it finds the recharge station.
Also have to clean it after every 2 or 4 sorties.  Not a biggie but not like a regular vacuum.
Have not used the regular vacuum except to clean roomba since I got roomba about a year ago.

Its not as good as a regular vacuum, but then again, I use it about 20 times as often!

If you have lots of "stuff" its not as good... think dining room, 4 legs per piece x 7 pieces = 28 obstacles in an area less than 6x8 and one useless roomba.

In my living room, kitchen, bedroom, computer room, its excellent.  It gets under the table and beds so i don't need to.

Does anyone have the Scooba?  I have a large kitchen 12x26 and it is all natural slate, so it isn't smooth but hate using the wet Swiffer on it.
