Then put your face on it.

Your body is collecting electrons from the carpet and discharging them on anything with potential for them to flow to.  The shock is from the electricity bridging the air gap from your finger to whatever you're about to touch.

I'm just kidding about the bubble gum.....

Run a ground wire from yourself to a ground rod. Never detach yourself.

Find something that is NOT contuctive–– the wall, your wood desk, anything–– and, before you touch anything that will conduct a spark, touch the nonconductive item for about 3 seconds. This slowly discharges the static charge in your body.

Wearing 2+ layers on clothes, I have static problems when doing that

Buy a Wilmhurst generator and make more.

If you carry a pocket knife, pull that out, then use that to touch the item first.  The shock will discharge through the knife and you won't feel it.

I do that when I feel all charged up and know I'm going to get shocked bad touching something.

It's a lot of fun when you give your wife or gf a kiss and BOOOM.

LOL

I do the same thing with my car keys or I'll touch the offending item with the back of my hand.

For some reason I build static electricity like nobody's business.

My dogs hate it.

Just a tip for people that get static built up in their clothes.  Take the article of clothing off and beat it up against a non-conductive wall hard a few times.  Sheet rock works really well.  Goodbye static.

They also make anti-static spray that you can use.  Or if you're in a pinch, wipe down with a dryer sheet.

You can also use a humidifier in your apartment and that will take care of it too.

Get a cheap humidifier and keep it running when it is cold out and the humidity is low.

Did you know that static electricity can discharge over 30,000 volts?

Drag a chain behind you to discharge the static before it builds up.  You will look like an absolute idiot, but you won't suffer much more static wonderment.

I have a pair of house shoes that cause me to build up a good amount. As I walk through the house I touch the screws on all the light switches I pass. I also use the corners of walls, metal corner bead. If I touch something every couple feet I discharge myself before a large painful amount builds up.

No, but the way I act about it, you'd think it was life-threatening.

Add some Downy to a spray bottle full of water.

It's caused by friction, the kind that furious masturbation or trying to scrub off a tattoo you got that says "Gay and Loving It!" on your shoulder.

Been there, done that.

This. Too much masturbation. Only way to fix it is more masturbation. You must masturbate all the electricity away.
