From what I understand, the 5.45x39's lethality isn't as dependant on velocity as the 5.56x45.

The 5.56, when it hits flesh at high velocity, the round pretty much explodes into several fragments. In order to get that velocity, you need a 20" barrel. The M4 has a 14.5" barrel and thus the 5.56 loses A LOT of the velocity it needs to provide it's knockdown power.

The 5.45 on the other hand is a long, skinny bullet, that has an air pocket in the tip. Once it hits anything, at any speed, it spins wildly out of control and rips to shreds anything it hits. Very effective though the 16" barrel of the AK-74.

I shot an oil drum with a 5.45  It came out the other side sideways. Very lethal round.

Actually, century tantals have been known to do just that.

Actually they are according to several range reports you can find.

5.56x45 ... (5+5-6) + (4+5) = 13 which was the orginal number of American colonies to break free from England. Coincidence? I think not.

Velocity has to play some part, but the 5.45 was designed for the shorter barrel. IIRC the hollow tip causes it to tumble faster, supposedly causing it to tumble 360 degrees twice before it exits.  This creates two temporary and permanent wound channels. Somebody used a 5.45 on a deer in the outdoors section, and that the internal organs were completely destroyed.

This might help...5.45x39 Ballistics

ETA:  I shot my son's AK-74 yesterday.  Pretty accurate, but I didn't shoot it enough to really get used to it.  It is a spicy round.  Doesn't kick as much as a 7.62x39, but more than my M4Gery.  All in all, a nice round...and very inexpensive.

I'm seriously looking at the S&W M&P 15R 5.45 upper addition to my stable.

surprisingly accurate.  There were some reports early on that keyholed at 25 m, but those reports are few and far between now.

Barrels that shitty? Are these US barrels?

Century was selling AK-74's and Tantals built using parts kits, and for some retarded reason, 5.56 barrels. This caused many rifles to keyhole, I know the Polish AK section waspacked with stories, questions, and pics of rifles that were keyholing. Century has unfucked themselves, buthose rifles are still out there. IIRC there may be a list of SN's that have the wrong barrels.

I did not find the Tantal to be accurate at all (actually precise is what we are talking about).

I think it had more to do with the folding stock than the barrel. No cheek weld, and a wire stock is just not that accurate for me.

To the OP, I read somewhere (so it must be true) that most Russian rounds have hollow areas in the bullets. It seems that the Hague Convention does not allow hollow points; however, manufacturing voids are allowed––and we know the Russians would NEVER exploit a loophole
