Well, I'm going to grab a new router, and I want to go wireless.

I've never had anything but Linksys routers, but I've read their new Wireless N routers aren't doing so hot.

The network will have 2 Xbox 360's, 3 laptops, and 1 desktop on it.

The majority of the time, everything will be wired. The wireless is obviously for the laptops, but it won't be in use constantly, and we won't be gaming wirelessly.

What is my best option?

Get the Linksys WRT54GL
It's software is Linux based. I've had one hooked up for 3 years with absolutely zero crashes

I am using a dlink DIR 655. I like it so far. I'm only running a Xbox and a Laptop. on it.

Also, sorry forgot to say, how reliable is wireless on different floors?  The modem/router are on the main floor, but laptops are on both the 2nd floor and in the basement.

Thanks.

I bought whatever netgear that bestbuy is currently selling and it's been idiot proof.

If you're going to be using the 54G, you will need at least one repeater/access point (I HIGHLY recommend a WRT54GTM with DD-WRT running in repeater mode) if you are covering multiple levels/a large space.

Seriously consider DD-WRT firmware, best router firmware out there. Google it.

How big an area do you need to cover?
Do you need N?
Do you need a gig switch?
Do you need dual band?  (A/B/G/N)

Let me just explain how our current network is set-up.  Feel free to tell me we're dumb, but this is how we set it up 6-7 years ago.

We finished our basement ourselves, with the help of my dad's friend, who is an electrician.  We put in outlets for power and then TV/Cable every 10-15 feet.  We have the internet connections hard-wired through the walls to a hub in the back room of the basement.  The hub is connected to the router upstairs through the wall.  We can decide exactly which outlets down here in the basement get internet.  We have 4 currently, two Xbox 360's, my laptop, and an old desktop.  The family laptop is upstairs next to the modem and router.

I don't even know what a gig switch is.

I'm still living with my parents, and my younger sister has a laptop too.  There are 3 laptops, she'll have hers upstairs in her room.  The family laptop will be on the main floor near the router.  My laptop is in the basement with the desktop and 360's.  So it's a 3 floor area on a good sized home.

What are the differences between N and G?

+2 Based off recommendations from guy's here.

I bought one for $89.00 + shipping from Tiger Direct a week and a half ago. So far so good, easy set up & using a PS3 to stream NetFlix wirelessly.

802.11g = ~22Mbit/s
802.11n =50-144 Mbit/s

Since my internet connection is capped at 3Mbit/s, I figure I don't need N.  I just bought a BUFFALO WHR-HP-G54, which has a more powerful transmitter than the Linksys WRT54 series but can still run DD-WRT and other third-party firmware.  It covers my 2400-square foot, 2 floor house.

+whatver for the D-Link DIR-655

I have been running mine for sometime now, and I love it.

NewEgg has a combo for $104 that includes the DIR-655 and a larger detached antenna.

ETA: It is a gigabit switch, so get some gigabit cards for your desktops if you are transferring a lot of files.

Would the addition of that antenna guarantee that the laptops on different floors would have more reliable speeds?

This is my first (well, second, but the first was VERY early in the wireless router age, back in like 2000) venture into this area.

If you've had reception problems I'd go with the BUFFALO WHR-HP-G54.

I don't remember what the problem was, but it was on the PS2 side I think.

higher transmit power will never hurt, and that router is cheap.  I would probably put dd-wrt on there, but you probably do not need to.
