For the non Rand readers, the text of the fictional Directive 10-289 from the novel Atlas Shrugged can be found here .
My opinion is that something like this is coming, maybe not in 2010, but not long thereafter. We have already seen CA issue IOU's for debts, tax returns, salaries. Along the lines of directive 10-289 or similar or partial measures, I see State/Fed governments enacting: 1. Exit tax for the wealthy to move from a high tax state like California to a minimal tax State like WY or TX. 2. The same as above for business who want to do the same. 3. Eventual 30 -50% tax on IRA, Roth, 401K or other types of retirement tax shelters. 4. Abolishment of 501 (c) (3) tax deductible donations. 5. Massive (300-500%) increases in Business licenses, building permits, car registrations, corporation/LLC registration or professional business testing (i.e. nursing certification, accounting or CDL examiner fees). 6. Closure tax for businesses that wish to close. 7. Raising the SS retirement age to 87. 8. 10% tax (forfeiture) on the balance of savings deposits. 9. Outlawing the private transfer of any amount of currency overseas without Government review and approval. 10. Outlaw "right to work" and mandate unions. What other laws/proclamations do you envision State/Fed Gov enacting in an attempt to stave off the inevitable? Or do you think we can somehow miracioulsly pay off our debtors without bankruptcy/economic collapse Ala' Argentina or Mexico? Yeah my tinfoil might be a little tight, but Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged reads more like a narrative than fiction on a daily basis. Ed |

Ed Just what is being done now is enough to to give me the hebejebes, and thats just what we "Know" about. None of what the Presbo and the senate house want to pass or have passed is sustainable. Shows me we are royally F'ed in the A. |

I see gridlock after 2010. Stay vigilant, my friends, but IMHO, this president has spent a large portion of his political capital (hehe... how ironic) on this health care bill.
Considering the pain that the Democrats have endured on this bill so far (and keep in mind that 1. the fight isn't over quite yet, and 2. Obama lost a good deal of what he originally wanted), and based on how long it took the health care bill to pass (remember Obama's town hall meetings over the summer?), and noting that Congress spends most of the summer out of session, I'd say the Dems have one more big fight in them before the House switches to Campaign Mode. Then again, I'm not sure how much of that is reasoned assessment and how much is wishful thinking.

Amen on 2010...
We could not have hoped for more criminal actions by the dimocraps. They have shown us that they could outspend Bush more than 4-to-1 and they did it in the first year. I'm looking forward to landslide "mandates" in the next elections. The libs just loved that term "mandate" and I'm gonna have fun using it against them every chance I get. Hopefully, we can castrate the Kenyan's political power in the new year and then put him in the unemployment line come 2012 after 2 solid years of a lame-duck administration. |

Rhode Island also has an exit tax. You pay to turn in licence plates to your car. If you don't pay then, they keep the car on the tax books and you have to keep paying the property tax. How is that enforced once you become a citizen of another state? I think that Conn. has something similar. My cousin moved down here a few years ago and kept getting bills for taxes on his van. For some reason or another the state of Conn. would not allow him to get a NC divers licence until he payed the tax. Took him over a damn year to get it all figured out. I told him to tell the state of Conn to pound sand since he was a NC resident and that they could not enforce thier laws in this state. Like the libtard dumbass he is he went and payed the fucking bill. |

Actually, I would not be shocked to see IRAs and 401ks at some point forcibly integrated in the SS system in order to keep it afloat and put everyone on an even pay level. Their reasoning being "we are not taking it, you will still get it, just not as much and only to be fair to others."
If the current health bill passes, I still forsee a single-payer plan, this is just a minor step for the libs. Doctors will have their pay limited. Also CEOs and business owners. Ability to travel and move between states restricted to only "apporved" purposes. Government entities and certain corporations will have unfettered access to bank accounts and investment accounts for "ensuring taxes are paid." Your vehicle and licensing taxes and fees are automatically withdrawn. Taking away of non-profit status for churches, specifically Christian. Abolishment of private schools and home-schooling, public only. More Robin Hood taxes on wealthy property owners and corporations to distribute to inner city schools and residents. |

I don't think it is right, but the government most likely would use that line of reasoning. |

But we don't have any sales tax. |

have to pay sales tax at purchase and property/wheel tax on vehicles here every year no matter how old its almost $200 a year to put plates on my 02 Focus For new vehicles here it is over $400 per year and gradually goes down over 10 yrs. Then you can perm register for about $150 |

Sorry, there is more than sufficient Federal case law that attempting to restrict the ability of citizens to move between states would be struck down by every Federal court that sees it. In fact, while the courts won't block restrictions on moving some types of guns between states, they HAVE blocked attempts by California to impose residency requirements before allowing use of government aid services (I think the law restricted payments to what the recipient would have received in their previous state of residence). |

There is already precedent set for exit tax outlined in the case of the NE states require a tax to turn in vehicle tags, not much more of a stretch for an exit tax. |
yep unconstitutional all you need is about 100 million dollars and a decade to get it to the SC if you avoid any legal landmines during the time it moves up the legal food chain and then they MIGHT find in your favor of course after that they will just tweak the law a tiny bit and tell ya to start over |
