Copper thief grabs wrong wire
Posted: Dec 24, 2009 3:02 PM CST EAGAN, Minn. (AP) –– Police in Eagan say a 33-year-old St. Paul man was severely burned and two other people were arrested in the attempted theft of copper wire from a power substation. The man was taken to Regions Hospital with severe burns to his torso. He was in stable condition. Investigators say he cut through the substation's barbed wire-topped chain link fence early Wednesday, climbed a high-voltage transformer and touched a line that carries 69,000 volts. Officer Danielle Anselment says witnesses reported a flash and a large boom that could be seen and heard for miles. About 6,500 homes lost power for about 2 1/2 hours. Dakota Electric Power estimates the thieves could have made away with only a little more than $100 worth of copper. |
