What should it be?  I have a few cheapies,
but I would like just one to be my one I carry all the time.

Personal taste.

I have a bunch of knives, but I usually carry my Kershaw Scallion. It's not obnoxiously big or heavy, doesn't make me look like a paratrooper, yet it does the job.

I have a Gerber Paraframe with the serrated edge, solidly made, durable and cheap enough that it can be lost without a care.

I have one of these as well. The only thing I don't like about it is the grip can get a little slick if you're sweating.

I carry a Kershaw Leech daily, great knife

ETA: I do not suggest the slick sides model, they have one with nice ruggedized polymer scales that helps if you are working in wet/sweaty situations.

Once I went to a small fixed blade for EDC I never looked back. I have been carrying a Blind Horse Knives wharnclife style knife for a few months now and it is optimal for my needs. The blade is around 2.5" and the shape handles everyday chores great. It was a special of the month a while back, but I am sure there are plenty of makers that do a similar style. For a good quality name brand you are probably looking at between $60 and $125.

Yup, and if you're up in Wyoming in the winter, you'd better be wearing gloves while using it.
Otherwise you will stick to it.

all metal construction is tops IMHO.

I am looking at that same knife as I post this...I gave it to my 6 year old and he left it on my desk when he was watching "resident evil" on the desktop..

Fixed blade.Don't like things around my neck so I carry a small neck knife with a kydex sheath in my pocket.Trim and lightweight while being much stronger than a folder. It's a handmade custom from Coombs thats scary sharp and only set me back about $100.There's any number of neck knives.prodution and custom, that would be great choices.

I have a Mel Pardue Benchmade folder.  Carried it for years, and I really like it.  They don't make this particular model anymore, but I would happily buy another Benchmade knife.

I'm a construction worker and have had some expensive knives get wrecked at work, clips breaking off etc. So I have a few knives that are expensive but mostly I carry a benchmade AUS8. It's cheap but sharp and easily replaced.

AG Russel Featherlite One Hand Knife

Light, inexpensive, useful size, easy to sharpen. You will forget you are carrying it. I like the general pupose blade.

my personal experience with the kershaw scallion is that it has a little plastic safety lever to retain the blade.  that sumbitch breaks pretty easily.  this safety is kind of important, because the assited opening mechanism trips pretty easily, which also makes it a pretty slick and quick opening knife.
like others have said, the gerber paraframe is pretty slippery and not as user friendly to open one handed compared to other designs out there.

i like kershaw folders myself.  perferably a black one with black clip so i can wear it with a suit and not have a shiney handle/clip sticking out.

I have a kershaw ken onion blackout (plain edge).  It's a decent enough knife for $60.

A pocket knife is the one knife your likely to have on you at all times and when the shtf. It's worth carrying one as good as you can afford. I carry a Spyderco Caly3 everyday and it's one of the best pocket knives I've ever owned only surpassed by my Spyderco Manix. Georgia limits the blade size to 3 inch though so the Manix is too big, and the Caly3 being more compact is excellent for various pants and situations.

Purpose/usage?  Price range?  Folder?  Fixed blade?

As usual - everyone will recommend whatever they own - without asking you how you intend to use it.

I've got a Spyderco Police that is great. It's a big knife, but the handle is very thin so it doesn't take up much space in your pocket. I just wish they made the G10 version in the combo edge.

Spyderco delica is a great EDC. Decent steel, excellent ergo's and you won't cry too hard if you lose it.
