RICHARDSON – A gunman who robbed a bank fired at officers Friday afternoon, then fatally shot himself in the head as he ran away, according to police.
Police said they did not know whether the man, who appeared to be in his early 20s, intended to shoot himself or the gun fired accidentally as he ran. No officers were injured. The man's name had not been released Friday evening.
A man walked into a Washington Mutual bank inside a Kroger grocery store about 4:30 p.m. and pulled a gun on a teller, police said. The teller gave the man an undisclosed amount of money in a briefcase. He left the store and got into a car driven by a woman.
Police, following a tracking device hidden in the money, stopped a car driven by a woman at Berry Trail Drive and Belt Line Road in Far North Dallas. The gunman, who was hiding in the back seat, jumped out and fired twice at officers before running, police said.
One shot shattered a police car windshield. Officers did not return fire, police said.
The man ran into an apartment complex parking lot, and the gun fired again, killing the man.
Police recovered the money near the car.
The car's driver, a 34-year-old woman from El Paso, was being held at the Richardson jail on suspicion of aggravated robbery.
