I always liked the sound of firing an M60. Maybe it was just me, but I could always hear the sound of the action working, along with the links & brass being kicked out, much more clearly than the report.

5"/45 caliber Mk45 naval gun

If you stand on deck when it fires, you can hear a "whoosh-whoosh-whoosh-whoosh-whoosh..." from the shell receding off into the distance.  I'm not sure of the exact mechanism involved but it sounds a lot like you'd imagine a 75 lb chunk of steel and explosive flying at >2500fps
