I fail at baking. My GF told me to put her cookies in my oven, and I did it, at the correct temperature. It just set off my firealarm. The cookies are burnt. And the noise made my ears ring. And now I'm pissed. |

I'm not saying you fucked up, but I NEVER finish baking anything that someone else started. On a more serious note, have you never made cookies? You should make some, because they're delicious!! Though not as scrumptious as pie... |

Quoted: No. My mom was a stay at home mom, and is a master at everything cooking related. I should have picked up on some of that knowledge, and probably still can if I show up and ask her to demonstrate. But no, I haven't baked cookies since home ec in 7th grade. Lol. Reminds me of my college days. My roommate had something in the oven, and promptly set off the smoke detector. The girls living upstairs yelled down "Are you guys burning the house down?" To which my roommate yelled back "No, we're cooking!" We didn't get much play from the girls upstairs |

Quoted: Quoted: no timer I used a timer. You set the timer to 75% or less of the recommended time. And that timer is FOLLOWED. Ovens have a 10-15º "droop" with some "overshoot". Meaning if the temperature dial is spot on, the temperature may vary by 25 degrees or more. |

As you have already figured out... ovens vary in temperature. What is 350 to one oven turns out to be 375 in another. Plan accordingly.
Also, cookies finish solidifying after they are taken out of the oven (imagine steaks on a grill, if you need that mental help). Thus, you take them out "early" not right when they have reached the correcy density/texture, since that would be taking them out "late." You have to develop a sense for these things by waiting, watching and smelling. It's not just a numbers game. You can't just set the timer and forget about it, even though those other guys seem to be suggesting so. Every batch of homemade cookies has its own unique point of perfection. ETA clarity |

Be pissed at yourself for leaving them in the oven too long and ruining perfectly good cookies! When making cookies you really need to babysit the first batch so you have an idea of how long they should be cooked for then you can cook consecutive batches for the same amount of times. This frequently will vary slightly from the amount of time and heat specified in the directions. |
