I have an old Whirlpool washing machine that has been having balancing problems lately.
Today it finally said ENOUGH and began beating on itself enough to make me think the springs that hold the wash tub together broke.

Well further investigation reveals that the springs are still in place, but I found what looks like two keeper pins that hold the wash tub and frame together dropped out.
1) Should their be 4? The frame appears to have a place for more on each corner of the machine. Both I found were on one side only making me think that there should be 4.
2) The pins appear to be held in place by cotter pins, what would make the cotter pin not only break, but disappear?
3) Anything else I should look at while I got the thing open?
Pics coming shortly.

The pin the  goes between the frame and the wash tub. The plastic cup 'caught' the pin whenever it fell out.

There are only 2 of these cups and pins on the same side. Should there be more?

The cup and pin as found.

Surprise!! Where is Dfrige whe you need him?

The pin in its 'normal' position?

The bottom side of where the pin fits. Note the small hole in the frame next to  the pin. It seems like the pin should also go through this but does not fit.

Well I was wrong. The last pic in the OP shows the pin where it seemed to fit best. In reality in needed to fit through the bottom frame as well. Wasn't too hard to fix, just made my own parts.

You sure thats just not a shipping pin to hold the tub in place? [it is]

If it's a Whirlpool then it should have self leveling feet in the rear. Rock it forward and back several times to reset. If it's on a soft floor that isn't all that sturdy you'll have problems exactly what you are describing.

Make sure the rear feet are moving in and out as they need to be. If you have to, place a 3/4 piece of plywood under the feet to giver it a better base to work on. If it's on the 1st fllor of a modular or in a house trailer, these complaints are common.

Oh and take the pins you put in back out, they are for shipping only and not to be in place when in use.

Shipping pin?

Hope not.

As far as leveling... the thing would not keep level due to it coming off center so much it would beat against the internal shell.

What kind of floor is it on?

Painted Concrete.

If it's concrete then you shouldn't be having an issue. Is the machine actually moving around on the concrete? Your machine is a very simple durable design they have used for many years, they don't really have many issues save for the coupler between the motor and the transmission and the agitdogs and both of those are very easy and cheap to repair.

Nope, just the internal wash tub beating the inside of the shell.

Is the shell placed on the machine correctly? IE, is the rear base locked into the tabs on the frame and the front under the frame lip? If the shell isn't placed on it correctly, you will have those issues also.

It has been in use for the last 4 months in the same spot.

This is more of a recent change.

And yes, those were the shipping pins. It wont spin now.

The tub shouldn't be hitting anything. Are you sure the fill tray at the top is fitted correctly where it should be? Did you ever take the shell off and make sure it is in the tabs? If it wasn't, they tend to slowly bend the tabs down, then start to move around. You can bend them up again with a pair of pliers. You can see the slots in the shell that they are supposed to go into.

Since I need to take it apart again I will check it.
