| Me- Hot Chocolate (Dark Chocolate Gingerbread) with a bit of Pyrate Rum |
|
I just bought a 1.5 liter bottle of Harwood Canadian.
But that's for drunk hot dogs for Monday night. I sampled a spoonful to make sure it was good enough to use. (Gave it up for a buddy of mine.) Mmm...Coke. Needs no whisky. But does need ibuprofen. Shoveled the driveway four times already. |

Quoted: Less than 40 miles away, there is a craft distiller producing absinthe. How things change over the years! Is absinthe worth it? Do you do the ritual? First time I've tried it. This is french stuff, high % of alcohol and uses wormwood. I had watched a show on History HD on it or maybe Nat Geo recently and got me interested. I wouldn't be suprised if the old stuff that caused the ban years ago had opium and toxic chemicals from improper distillation.... Some claim the chemicals in the wormwood are what cause it's famed "psychological" effects, but I don't buy that. After all, isn't vermouth made using wormwood? I don't know that I'm doing the ritual (according to the crap I saw on the HD show), but I am drinking it in a traditional style. I put 2 oz in a glass and added a teaspon a sugar (close enough to a sugar cube) and 3 oz of ice water - mixed. It's not bad. Its got a licorice type of taste, but is kind of tongue numbing at the same time. Is it worth it? Good question. I like to try different things, so it was worth it for me to buy a bottle. The jury is still out on whether I'll buy other bottles. All the high alcohol traditional absinthes I saw were expensive ie. $50 for 750 ml. However, if you want to rationalize, it is 1.5 times or more stronger than the average spirit, so comparing alcohol content / volume of a similar specialty spirit, it's not far off. You are going to drink less volume of this stuff in a sitting than say Bombay Sapphire. |

OK, I may or may not try it. The craft distillers near me also make a nice rye whiskey. Alcohol is alcohol, after all.
The Artisan Corsairs, which is the brand I referred to, is a red absinthe. I know that it does not contain thujone,in any significant quantity. Ethanol is bad enough. I need to get up there. They offer tours. I would like to see their production facilities. |

I have done several winery and brewery tours here and abroad. Sam Adams in Boston is always good, and suprisingly Heineken (I'm not a huge heineken fan) was good in Amsterdam. I got to try their special dark there, which I never would have tried otherwise and thought it wasn't bad. Actually bought some when I saw it in a store after I got back state side. Perhaps you can sample the red absinthe. I'd be interested to know how it is. |
