I caught the 12:55 showing of Avatar 3D today.
I expected abit more from the 3D. Very little stuff seeming to be coming at you & mostly just a deep depth of field at the screen & inwards. They didn't set up the story line up very well IMO. The story line was very predictable & well-worn from many other uses of the basic theme. The special effects seem to drive the movie. The characters were pretty shallow. The natives acted like a mix of American Indians & Africans. Sort of a mix of Dances with Wolves & Congo. Otherwise the special effects were very good but the weak/predictable story lessened the package. I actually thought the last Star Wars movies had better special effects without the 3D. Lot's of Mother Nature/Gaia stuff & how bad the US military is. I'm glad I saw it for the 3D stuff, but the movie was like cotton candy - Looks good, tastes good for split second then gone. My .02 PS: There was a US AirForce 3D add as a preview that actually had stuff coming at you which was great, but you didn't see with the movie itself. |

I think they're shying away from the obnoxious "oooh, duck, it's coming right at me!" style of 3D movies. It's really just supposed to add a little depth and make the overall immersion factor greater. And I think it did that. |

The "official" reviews are panning this movie. They even had a female reviewer said the message was so predictable and heavy handed it was laughable. Another reviewer complained the fx fell far short of the "revolutionary" fx promised by Cameron.
So, tell me, were the bad guys Marines or some kinda paramilitary force with a Marine vet? |

I think Cameron has been so obsessed with this for so long he lost it. Too personal, he did this for himself under the guise of a theatrical film. T1, T2, Aliens, Abyss, True Lies. Major action but people could relate to the characters and go along for the ride. Truly memorable films, ones that you can watch over and over again. Avatar is propaganda and one mans opinion wrapped in a technological bow. People see through this shit whether Hollywood wants to admit it or not. I'm fine with waiting for it to show up on Netflix. |

The 3D experience in a theater is what makes this movie. Good lord, do people really think stuff shooting at you is the only thing 3D can do? That went out in the 50s. This is about depth of field, and bringing you into the screen, not the other way around. It's got the same wow factor as the 1st time ya saw Star Wars in the theater (whoops some of ya too young to remember that), or Jurassic Park when they 1st see the dinos. Times 10. Shallow characters?? Please, this crowd loves Red Dawn and Heat for gosh sake. These ain't Marines, they're mercs, the theme worked fine for Lawrence of Arabia, and you will not have really seen this movie if you see it without the 3D at home. Lighten up, get a bucket of popcorn and enjoy the movie. |

I just dropped my youngest son off to see it. It was a very last-minute plan and we didn't get to the theater until 8:00 for the 8:10 showing, so I thought it would probably be sold out.
Nope, they got right in. Doesn't bode well for the movie making a profit. |
