For now, I'm leaving the department name out. Here is the story. Walking down a street one weekend, having left a movie I see a female officer that had, best I could describe, her hair (fake or real) in the form of a "Z" that stood about a foot tall on her head. Two blocks later there are three uniformed officers standing on the side of the street in a semi-circle with TASER's in hand. Talking amongst one another, laughing and pulling the trigger over and over again. A little further down the street there is another uniformed officer standing in front of a club with 5 maybe 6 people around him. With TASER in hand, he's jabbing it towards people around him while laughing. A few of them I'm sure he knew. But, by the looks of the others, they thought he was out of his mind! But the officer, while getting a good laugh was having a good time.
At this point I'm really thinking to myself that it's a bad night, and either they just issued TASER's to any officer with an IQ above 80 and it was fun, happy time or I just witnessed something that's one in a million. Days later, with the same friends, came across 4 uniformed officers that one friend wanted to ask about the behavior we had observed nights before. I said NO, this will lead nowhere good. He walked across the street any way, so I followed. As he's asking, and before finished with his sentence asking "the procedures followed for pulling TASER's" the officer already had TASER in hand and said, "you mean this?", pointed it at him and pulled the trigger giving off that nice electrical sound while laughing. Then he points it at me where I see a nice little red dot on my chest, and he asks, "do you want to get TASERed." All the while laughing. Not to get into what went thru my mind thinking this guy just threatened me for no reason, I just turned and walked away very quickly. My friend followed 20 seconds later. We were both speechless. This was a few weeks ago. This past weekend I came across a single uniformed officer from the same department that just came across to me as being a bit more stable. So, still being curious myself asked a more direct question. I asked if you only pull a TASER when in defense of yourself or others, or when you feel threatened? He answered that the only thing need to pull and use a TASER was if he tells you to do something you you don't comply, you going to get TASERed. So, TASERs are not a defensive tool but rather a tool of compliance?? My title is not an attack on Law Enforcement, but just to make a point that to be a profession you must have professionalism. Do they not teach law enforcement to think any more, but just ways to make people comply? |

Quoted:
but just to make a point that to be a profession you must have professionalism. You have that wrong. To be a profession, you get paid for something. You presume skill and ability, but this is separate from the fact that they are in a profession because they are being paid for it. |
