Just wondering what the have uses to recover data from a crashed USB flash drive? Client did not back the files up, and now it won't mount on Windows XP or Mac OSX. Any software or 3rd party services that are reputable?

what error is 'won't mount'?

At this point all i know is either file-system is shot, or the hardware is shot, or windows is stupid.

Thats just it, You insert the Flash Drive and either the Mac system never recognizes the darn thing, OR Windows tries to make the icon show up on 'my computer' but when you click on it, it tells me to insert a media into drive 'g'. OR Windows does not know what it is, and it says it needs to be formatted.

Uh, client is a moron?

USB flash drive <> backup.  I'm sure you know this.  Now they do to.

You learn something new every day, whether you like it or not.  In this case, I'm betting the client does not like the lesson of the day.

Ok, so windows gives it a drive letter, so i'm thinking it is still partitioned, but no identifiable filesystem...

might try partition recovery software.  might cost you $50 or $100.

something like this that i just google searched for.

VBasic much?

But 2 flash drives would make a good backup.  It doesn't need to be put to tape for a backup to be valid.

Easy Recovery Professional.  Google it.  Download it.  Recover your data.
It is not cheap by any means but I have recovered more HDD's and Flash drives than I can remember.

Most of my backups are to DVD-RW.  Flash drives are great, and I'd agree that two flash copies would be a reasonably safe backup plan, but they are not intended as backup devices IMO.  There's nothing on any of my flash drives that isn't backed up someplace else.

Download Hiren's bootdisk 10.0    It has everything you'll need to copy or recover everything you need.  google search "hiren 10.0 + site:www.9down.com"    On that page you'll find a couple download links.   They're not very obvious so look at the end of the program list.  Burn that .iso, plug in your flashdrive and reboot.  Browse to the partition and recovery tools and you'll find what you need.
