For SHTF, general purposes or grins and giggles?

Really depends on the gun.  A few hundred each of .45 ACP and 9mm.  Five boxes of magnum rifle hunting ammo.  200 rounds of Heavy .45 Colt, About a case (1000 rds) of .223

1000 per gun in original sealed cases where possible, then about 500 rounds good brass that I reload and roatate through.

A thousand each, enough components to load a thousand more. Hunting stuff I only load 50 or so at a time, but I buy in bulk and I have enough components on hand for 500.

About the same here, except 300 Win and 300WSm.  I keep about 150 for each of these

How much do you use at the range to practice?

How many to zero?

How many for 'carbine' courses?

Now, it's highly unlikely that a SHTF would endure for years, but suppose a tax was imposed...how long could you go before practice etc becomes too 'taxing' on the stockpile?

I'm thinking 1k pistol rounds, 5k .22lr, and 500 shot gun (ouch!), 1k battle rifle/hunting would about do it for years.

Not for war, and not if your intent is to arm the militia...

5000 rounds minimum for 2 AR's, one for me and one for the wife unit, This fits nicely in 6 ammo cans. All other guns, minimum 2000 rounds per weapon. Of course this is my minimum, and everything over this is just icing on the cake.

Ideally, I'd like to have 50K rounds of .223/5.56 and 10K rounds for every other caliber, execpt the AK47, would like to have 50K for those as well.

If the firearm is a primary for competition or classes, I like to stock pile a years work of ammo.

So IDPA, we burn about 50 rounds a match, 2 matches a month, so 1200 rds.

I want to take X class, and it's 500 rds a day and 2 days, so additional 1000 rds.

etc.

17 rounds, but it's not really comfortable.  More like comforting.  8 in the mag, one in the tube, and 8 more on the side.

At least when I changed from full gubment to commander length, I stopped pinching my backside every time I sat down.

Well put. Plus, .22 ammo play a big part as a survival rifle so you can go out and get your dinner. Don't forget to stock up on .22

I should also mention that your ammunition stockpile should only count loose ammunition.  There should be a separate amount uncounted from the stockpile that is in magazines.

In addition to my stockpile, I also keep:

7 (+1 in the gun) full mags per rifle
4 (+1 in the gun) full mags per pistol
8 (+1 in the gun) full mags per shotgun

A few weeks ago, my large industrial rated steel cabinet which I use for ammo collapsed. The resulting avalanche of ammo taught me a valuable lesson.

Clearly I need a second ammo cabinet now.

That is definitely low for some and might be a little high for others.

If I only had 1000 rounds for each of my AR's I would feel like I did not have nearly enough.
If I only had 1000 rounds for each 12 gauge that might be just about enough.
If I only had 1000 rounds for each hunting rifle I would say "fine".
If I only had 1000 rounds for each 22 that would be an embarrassment.
If I only had 1000 rounds for my .357 mag I would say "OK"
If I only had 1000 rounds for my 2" .38spl I would say that is probably more than enough because I have the 2 Glock 40's, the .45LC, the 9mm, the .380 and the .357 with thousands of rounds for them.......

Though I'd probably bump the .22 to 5K. Also, add 1K pellets for a 1,000+ FPS pellet rifle.

minimum level = as much as I can afford

Basically, if I can afford more ammo, I feel the need to buy more and that becomes my new minimum level. If I can't afford more ammo, the amount I have on hand is the new minimum level. Pretty simple really.
