Those of you old enough to recall how cool that game was when it came out?

Hehe....I had pretty much forgotton about it but today I found a NIB shareware version at the used bookstore today,  unfortunately I forgot I no longer have a 3.5 disk drive to put the damn disks into.

LOL...oh well,  an interesting bit of gaming history I guess...

After getting hooked on Wolfenstein 3D, I couldn't wait for DOOM!  Downloaded it as soon as it came out.  Thanks for the memory!

I never vomitted, but I did feel sick playing Wolfenstein 3D several times.  I think it has something to do with the moving corridors of Wolf3D as opposed to Doom being outside.

Unfortunately, Doom eventually got Street Fighter 2 syndrome.  What I mean, is that after Street Fighter 2 got big, Capcom released update after meaningless update for the same game with some of the improvements being kinda trivial.  After Doom 2, we got a slew of other Doom games such as Ultimate Doom, Final Doom, and others, I believe.  As I remember, there wasn't a whole lot new in the later releases.

my boss and I used to play till bed time after work on 9600 baud, I had a phase linear 400 with thumpin 12" woofers, a red battle light
and a custom keyboard, I was a doom and doom 2 master (start any level with just a pistol and win on ultra violence)

My favorite was secret level 15a

Loved it... Best part was that every evening, my (then) 3 year old son would crawl into my lap, and we'd go kill monsters.
He and I were reminiscing about that just a few days ago.

That's pretty funny - I remember playing so much at college that I had those types of dreams.

My dreams did not usually replicate gameplay, but would often be people I knew in real life interacting in one of the levels/rooms in Doom!

Pretty freaky!

The only dreams stranger than those are the ones when I would forget to remove the nicorette patches before going to bed! Positively psychedelic!

They have it for download on the Xbox Live marketplace. The first time I played DOOM was on the SNES back when I was like in 3rd grade. It was a blast playing through again and hearing the best video game music ever.

I'm 99% sure you can find a freeware version online if you search.

That really broke some ground.  Those pink bull things would get my adrenaline going.

Fuck yeah. I was only like 12 but I loved DOOM. I rmember all the sounds of the doors opening, and anytime I see a tv show using that sound, I immediately think of Doom. I loved the shotgun and shooting Imps.

Man, that game is a CLASSIC.

You and I, both.

Still, Doom and Doom II were unbelievable kick-ass for the time.

I also deeply miss the X-Wing and TIE Fighter games, and all the simulations from Microprose.

I can still remember a number of the levels to the point where I can walk through them in my head and even remember the secret doors and where the monsters are.

I had a 286 and got a copy of Doom. I was really disappointed that I couldn't run it since you needed a 386 processor to run it. Someone explained how I could run the game on a 286....so that summer I played Doom on my 286, at basically one fourth the speed.

we got modded wad files to replace the grunts with storm troopers, music with nivana (no lyrics), and the pink things with barney the purple dinosaur

in fact last time I fired it up it still had the storm troopers enabled

I loved playing DOOM!

Several years ago I got a phone call at work and it was John Carmack! He was getting into rocketry and was interested in our product. Man, it was so cool to talk to him!

Someone explain this - it looks like Doom 3 was released for xbox several years ago but Amazon wants $60+ for it. Is it really that good? It doesn't even look like it's Xbox 360.

According to Google, Doom 3 Limited Collectors Edition prices:

Buy.com - $12.95
Amazon - $98.95
JJGames - $10.83
Bull Moose (?) - $17.42
GamesDirectOnline - $12.95

Good times, but it gave me too much motion sickness back then to enjoy. Oddly enough, Descent didn't, and I loved that game.

Forgot about that trick.  You had to time it right or just hope you didn't shoot open something explosive, classic.  Loved it when you needed ammo and you got Schnapps.

Enough of the 2D highjack, I guess.  Yes, DOOM was awesome, burned many an hour glued to the PC.
