The wife has this scientific calculator. It is acting screwy, and we assumed the batteries were dead. New batteries don't help. The screen is dimly black, and if you hit the y function key, it goes to a graphing application. I have never used one of these before, and have no idea what to do. Is there something that I can do to make it work? Outside of dropping another $125? |

On the back, or maybe under the battery cover, is there a small hole? perhaps labeled reset? It's been awhile since I used one, but I think you could reset them using a straightened paper clip.
I guess I was wrong. This is the procedure for a reset: 1. Press 2nd MEM (that is the second function of the + key) 2. Choose 7 (Reset) 3. Scroll right so that ALL is selected 4. Press 1 5. Press 2 (Reset, and read the warnings) Read more: http://www.tvmcalcs.com/calculators/faq/ti83_faq#ixzz0WTWbTX8j |

The dimness could be due to the contrast. I'm not sure how much you know about the calculator, but look at the symbol around the arrow buttons. There should be a colored symbol that looks like a half-filled circle. Press either the ALPHA or 2ND button on the left, depending on what color the circle is, and then press the up arrow. If the screen lightens at all, keep doing this until it looks right. If it doesn't, try doing the same thing, only with the down arrow.
The problem with the Y button sounds like there is already something programmed in for Y. Press 2ND and then the Y= button. This should, IIRC, bring up a screen that has some functions on it. Delete those and the button should work like she expects it to. Alternatively, you may need to hit ALPHA and the Y= button. Hope that helps, it's been ~10 years since I've used one of those. |
