My wife inherited a little 2 year old female shih tzu dog that weighs about 15lbs. We had it for about 2 months now and everything was going fine until recently. It has not pooped in 3 days. She tries when I walk her but nothing comes out. Is it normal for little dogs not to shit for 3 days? I have always had big dogs in the past and they never had a problem shitting. Is there a remedy that will work?

wheat germ will do it.  Butter will turn it into a pressure washer.

"Pressure washer" implies that the end result will be clean.

An emergency back up dog should not be viewed in the same way as a BUG: It's not supposed to be small, concealable, and only better than nothing...

Well my wife just called and said she took it for a walk and it pooped out a couple of very hard peices of poop. Not very much though but some came out. So I don't think she is blocked up it's just all hardened in her for some reason. I put some metamucil in her food yesterday and gave her a table spoon of castor oil last night. She acted like she was choking to death after the castor oil though. So I think those things are starting to work and soften things up. I don't. Think there is a blockage.

Its not normal for small dog to not poop for 3 days. You should go to the vet and get x-rays. The problem is usually some kind of blockage. Especially since the dog is trying to go, but cant, that means they are feeling it.

We've been once for x-rays, the dog shredded a new toy and ate alot of string from it causing a blockage. She actually passed it on her own only a few hours before she was scheduled for surgery. There have been 3 other times she was going to go to the vet, but she started pooping again right at the 3 day mark, which is when the vet told us we should be worried.

Put some olive oil on the food.  Laxatives can kill little dogs.

My ex had a Shih-tzu.  One time I thought it was blocked up, as it didn't shit for days.  Then I caught it laying a turd in the yard and turning around and scarfing it up.  Nasty little dog.  She told me it was one of their traits.

Mystery solved. It's crapping in the cats litter box. It's previous owner trained it to do that. Who woulda thunk it?

If it still seems to be having trouble actually releaving itself of stool then I would recommend about half a tablespoon of smashed pumpkin.... Seems to work just fine for both loost stools and constipation in dogs.
