I encounter, daily, ample evidence that the majority of our society, most certainly, have not learned a single lesson from the past.

Such blindness causes them to be equally deaf to the ticking clock that is the timekeeper of the return of dark horsed one with “REPEAT IT” scribed into his sickle.

Agree 100%.

In spite of the old saying "Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it," I am absolutely convinced that the majority of humanity learns NOTHING from the past.

ETA: I have the BBC's "Auschwitz" on DVD and highly recommend it.

Thank god something like that could never happen here.

There just isn't the type of division between the haves and the have nots, or between whites and all the other races.

We're just one big happy fuckin' family here in the US of A.

Uh-huh...sure.

History indicates such may not be the case.  Can you imagine for one second what our country would be like if the far Left or Right ever gained total power, such as that acquired by Hitler and Stalin?

As soon as they had collected all of the privately owned guns and put down the counter-revolutions, the mass killings would begin...just like in Germany and the Soviet Union in the '30s and '40s.  We are no different.  Given ultimate power, our leaders would unleash their "monsters from the Id."

If people are 'truly' on the right, this would never happen.  All the people that caused mass destruction/murder were all leftist (Hitler, Stalin, Mao, ect)  Far left is dictatorship, far right is very small and limited government.

when the moment comes for things to fall apart as it most assuredly will, it should be very interesting to see just what DOES happen after all the books, talk, movies etc about how things could go down and what people will likely do...it'll either be 'planet of the apes' or 'little house on the prairie' time....I think that the human animal is just that:an animal and once the veneer of civilization is removed...look out.

One of my attending doctors during my training had been in the Canadian medical unit attached to the British that liberated the Bergen-Belsen concentration camps.  He was Jewish (passed away in 2001).  You can imagine the impression that left on him.  He discussed a lot of the medical aspects of it.  One interesting statistic was that 98% of the surviving inmates tested positive for tuberculosis.

I have visited Dachau, it is something you'll never forget.  You really cannot get it across completely to someone who has not been there.

Even though it was the first and the one on which others were modeled, Dachau was relatively "innocuous" compared to many of the others like Auschwitz/Birkenau.  The treatment varied greatly depending on which camp and what country it was in.

Used to do service work at a Jewish community center in St. Louis, MO. Many, if not most, of the residents had numbers tatoo'd on their arms. I think every resident had lost relatives if not their whole family. They maintained a Holocaust museum with artifacts contributed by the residents.

Sobering. Uncomfortable. Troubling. Sorrowful. Enraging.

Not trying to hijack this thread because it's necessary  to be reminded of such events but...

Do we all know that Rahm Emanuel's (the kenyan's Chief Of Staff) father was one of the key players in establishing the modern nation of Israel ? I cannot for the life of me understand the game being played.

These are the kinds of Jews that figure "next time" they will either sell out their fellow man for favors from the next Reich, or better yet, be the ones giving the orders.

I have some issues with this.

I dated a jewish girl for over 3 years.

What struck me was that she and her friend thought only Jews were persecuted or killed.

When I asked her about the Armenians, Cambodians, and Poles and Russians.  She didnt have anything to say.

Later she did say that she didnt realize that.  She thought I was being an antisemitic at first.

I was merely pointing out Jews dont have a monopoly of getting their people slaughtered.

Second she was vehemently antigun.   Typical east coast liberal.

When I asked her if she would fight to keep her kids from being taken she said she would.  Then I asked her if she was going to throw stones at them?

I visited Dachau last summer and it was very sobering.  I was acting as a chaparone for a group of kids that my GF teaches.  While disturbing, I was very happy that we were able to take the kids there so that may see and understand it. Several of them couldn't take it after a while.  The images displayed there and the captions that explained them were very powerful.  Walking through the "showers" and crematorium were powerful experiences.

When I was in high school, we lived across the street from some jews.  The woman was an Auschwitz survivor.  She was a twin.  She survived and her twin sister did not.
Once before Halloween, she came over because a bunch of kids were throwing corn, and generally making a nuisance of themselves.  She was in tears, and told me this was the way it started with the Nazis.  It really freaked her out.

Hmmm I hear that phrase all the time. Doesn't ring true for me.
