Anybody like Japanese beer? Got a favorite?

Asahi or Sapporo both sure go nicely with O-Toro Tuna sushi, or raw Yellow Tail with soy citrus sauce, cilantro and sliced jalapeno, or to wash down a spicy shrimp hand roll.
It really is a good thing to go with beers that are native to the food you are having. They just "go" with the meal, and fit into the culinary language, and can be fun - even if they aren't your first choice otherwise. This was taught to me by a man who was a world traveller, and it was good advice. When in Rome..... But if I am just drinking beer without food, then it will be an English or Scottish ale, just cooler than room temperature. |

YEBISU, MALTS, ASAHI SUPER DRY. KIRIN Edit - DesuDurDesu you beat me to it. I dont think you can find Malts outside JPN, Yebisu you can. I actually like Premium Malts the most at of all the Japanese beers, kinda sucks if it is difficult to get outside japan. Right now is when all the 'fall' seasonal beer is being distributed, so look for a dark red/orange Yebisu can/logo colored, and that is the seasonal beer. Kirin has one that has red, orange, and brown leaves on the can/logo, thats Kirin's seasonal offering. |

I also like English ales around room temp. |

It's a toss-up between Kirin and Sapporo for me...so I'll usually have one of each when we go out for Japanese food. I've only had Kirin Ichiban. I kind of liked it even though it kind of reminded me of a Budweiser because of the rice. ![]() If you can, try Yebisu. There are three types, The Hop(Green can/logo), Black, and then Yebisu. It is from Sapporo Brewery, kinda like "premium" Sapporo lager, but different. |

I wonder how much it costs in the states for Japanese beer. Its probably cheaper than here regardless. I will be going to get some Chimay white, and maybe a Samischlaus(?) later today. |

I think I remember the 6 pack of Kirin I bought was like 6-7 bucks. I think Sapporo is more expensive, but I don't remember right now. |

In the states it's hard for me to find anything other than Sapporo, Asahi, and Kirin.. There used to be a sushi place near me that sold Orion, nd it was pretty good..... I've never tried a Japanese microbrew, I'll try to find one next time I'm out there.. beeeru
The Yamazaki single malt whisky is also pretty good if you're into that. |

Sapporo has one that is labeled- 麦とホップ/ Wheat and Hop, but it does not taste too hoppy. Aren't the ones made from soy beans and a few other choice items particularly bad? Also, isn't Hopponshu really really popular among the Japanese because it's so cheap? ![]() Is it worse than Malt Liquor?

Yona Yona Ale from Yo-ho Brewing is supposed to be good- I would not call it a microbrew, but Yo-ho brewing is quite small compared to the big 4 over here. |

They are made from Soy, and yes they are quite bad tasting unless your looking to get drunk. Happoshu is cheap, so alot of people buy it. Its due to the tax laws, etc., in which the more malt and hops that are used the more progressive and expensive the tax is. Asahi Super Dry, 6 pack, at the store is 1079 円/yen, compared to a six pack of various happoshu for 500-700 円/yen. ETA- spelling

HA! thats funny you say that because Malts is my favorite too, unfortunately I cannot get it here in the states.
When I go to Japan I have one more thing to look forward too, drinking Malts! Yebisu is damn good too. You can find that one here but it is definitely more rare. You can occasionally find the other beers Asahi, Kirin, Sapporo as Imports from Japan, But you would have to go to an Asian market like a Mitsua, or some beer connoisseur boutique type store. They are usually brewed in Canada as has been stated. Kirin is the oldest brand in Japan, started by some Scottish dude. I don't know what it is about that Malts that makes it so good, its even odd that I can enjoy it from a can, most beers I have to drink from a larger bottle to enjoy... I can't wait to go to Japan again and eat some fresh sushi/sashimi, eat at mossberger, even that greasy ass Tenya tempura joint sounds good right now and then drink some Malts and Yebisu Damn it, Now the wife and I must drink some beer. We will have to settle for some Fat Tire.
