Can you install a choke on a open choke smooth bore barrel?

ETA: I mean thread it to accept a choke.

If by "you" you actually mean a gunsmith capable of back boring and threading, then yes. It's a fairly common operation.

It almost makes more sense to get another 870 since it only costs about another $100 over a new barrel.
