so my laptop died and i had to reload my os (some virus or something). anyway, i lost all my files including my itunes library. does anyone know how i can get the songs off my ipod and back onto my computer?

i stopped my the apple store this morn and the guy i talked to alluded to the fact that it is possible but said they cant do it because of propriety issues and that it would make it possible for piracy. but this is MY ipod and MY songs, i just dont have all of the CDs anymore and i bought a bunch too.

is there a software i would have to buy or p program to download (which isnt a virus?)

There is a way to do it.  I had to do it when I lost my stuff on a pc.

If you go to the apple support website you will find the info there.  I wish I could just tell you how I did it, but it has been awhile and I don't remember all of the steps. I will look for the page that I found and try and post a link.

Good luck

Use this

http://www.sharepod.com

You can bypass all the apple BS, and get your music off the ipod.

I'm considering using it full time. It is not as featured at Itunes, but it does do away with BS restrictions.....

I formatted recently.  All I had to do was install iTunes again, plug the iPod in and it told me it would import my music from my iPod, but make my previous library unusable.  Presumably it creates an ID hash of some sort for each install of iTunes.  It said I had a limited number of times I could do this (I think 3?).

I formatted again more recently than that, but had the foresight to back up iTunes and it's associated "Application Data" folder(s) under Documents & Settings (music is on another drive so I didn't need to back that up).  All I did that time was install iTunes freshly again, import my entire music directory into it, and when it was done, close iTunes completely and copy and overwrite the entire iTunes program folder (NOT my music folder) and it's Application Data folder under my new username in Windows so it assumed it was the same install of iTunes and let me be.

He never said anything about an Apple computer.  I wouldn't use one if you paid me, but their music players are unquestionably second-to-none.

The touch doesn't have a disk use mode, like in other ipods so you can't just go pulling things off its hard drive. There's a program that will supposedly do it for you that's free, but it only works on 32-bit machines and I have a 64 bit so i can't use it and have no idea if it works or not.  Which is too bad because I had to format my hard drive awhile ago so now I'm up a creek without a paddle.

Here it is

to answer your questions i have a 80 gig ipod video (not the current model which is 160g)

I had a similar problem, and re-synching my iPod only took the songs I paid for from the iTunes library and put them back on my hard drive.  All the CDs I imported were no-go.

Fortunately, I back up all my music two times over between another PC and an external hard drive.  Once you get this sorted out, you should do the same.  I would have been proper fucked without some kind of back up.

thanks for all the help.

i ended up using copy trans.

it let me transfer 100 songs then told me i had to buy the full version (19.99)
i kinda didnt feel like starting all over because i have spent so much more time installing software and drivers that i broke down and bought it because it seems like a good program that i could use again (though i hope i dont have to)

yeah, i think im gonna see if i can save my whole system on my dad's external drive since it would only be like 10 gigs w/ all my programs and everything, that way if it does happen again i can just restore it.

I don't know if you are joking or not but I tend to agree.

I think it is a virus, it is as bad as Norton or McAfee.  It spreads its tentacles into everything and once installed, it can never be fully removed.

I had it install once while I was updating Quicktime and it was sucking up all my system resources and it could never uninstall it.  I always showed up in my task manager.

iTunes is the main reason I have not purchased an ipod as bad as I want a Touch, I am losing the battle in waiting for someone to makes something as good as the Touch but it doesn't look like that is going to happen anytime soon.

I am holding off now waiting for the Touch with a Camera, I have read rumors that it could be as soon as Christmas or their vaporware tablet.
