PROVO — What began as a noise disturbance complaint at a Utah County motel earlier this month may land three U.S. Secret Service agents in criminal court on allegations of misconduct involving a party with underage girls and alcohol.
Provo police and the Secret Service confirmed Thursday night that three out-of-state agents have been placed on administrative leave pending a criminal investigation.
According to Mike Mower, assistant to the Provo mayor, police received a disturbance complaint during the early hours of Feb. 1 at the Western Inn motel, 40 W. 300 South, Provo.
Police arrived and handled the disturbance. But it wasn't until five days later that police realized with whom they were dealing.
"Subsequent information received approximately five days later indicated the possible misconduct by three Secret Service employees," Mower said.
Authorities are not commenting officially on what may have happened at the motel, but the Secret Service says it is serious enough to place all three Secret Service agents on administrative leave.
But a source close to the investigation told the Deseret News that the agents may have been partying with underage girls in the motel room and supplying them with alcohol.
"On Feb. 1, three agents were sent back to their respective states for alleged misconduct," Secret Service public affairs agent Jim Mackin said.
He said all of the three officers were supposed to serve with Olympic security but were immediately pulled from duty. At the time of the party, Mackin said, the agents were considered off-duty.
As recently as this week, Mackin said, the agents have been placed on administrative leave pending Provo city's investigation.
"Currently, two Provo police detectives are in the process of interviewing the Secret Service employees who were allegedly involved. Detectives are returning from travels to Florida, Mississippi and Alabama, where they conducted interviews," Mower said.
Although detectives were expected back in Utah Thursday night, Mower said it may be another week until their investigation is complete.
The Utah County Attorney's Office has been alerted and will screen the case for possible criminal charges against the agents, Mower said.
Mackin said his office is taking the matter very seriously. "We have a zero-tolerance policy, but we are waiting for the facts to be determined," he said.
