I borrowed my step dad's 12 gauge Beretta Model al2 Magnum shotgun to go pheasant hunting in the morning. It only has 3" on the barrel, now I know it will shoot 2 3/4" shells fine but will it cycle them?  In doing some research it appears that the magnum had a heavier action so I'm afraid that it won't cycle the 2 3/4" shells.

It may or may not, depending on what you're using.  I'd shoot the hottest, heaviest 2-3/4 load you can, or at least get it out to the range and test it with what you plan to shoot.  I have a Remington SPR453, which has an adjustable gas-piston system that can be tuned to run light 2-3/4 target loads all the way up to 3-1/2 mags.....it can be finicky at the bottom end of the scale.

With a 1 & 1//4 oz load minimum, it should.

Hang it out the back door and find out. Heck, it's 23:00hrs.  Who would it bother?

Buy a $5 box of shells and find out.  Or am I reading it correctly and you have a new to you gun to take hunting tomorrow and yu don't know how to work it or how it works?

A little late to try to get prepared isn't it?

I would take a real wild guess that if it doesn't work with lighter shells it ought (ought) to have a way to adjust the gas action to take the lower power shells.  And if it does, (if) shouldn't that be in the owners manual?  Or did you not get that also?  You were planning on cleaning it after using it weren't you?  Going to take an auto pump down for the first time without an manual?

My experience too-works fine on the "heavy load" setting for everything down to 2 3/4 inch pheasant loads(Federal Hi-Power or similar) and target loads like Walmart 100 pack require adjustment. Great working gun, if a little short on cosmetics. Is the receiver finish on yours wearing fast too?

To answer the OP-it should cycle pheasant loads fine, if it's anything like the Beretta Pintail, A303 or 390 I shot(first two were mine, third was a friend's). They worked fine right down to "heavier" target loads. I did have a A303 in 20 gauge that was essentially 3 inch only though. Not familiar with your particular model, but I would think the gas system is at least similar to the 390.

I've shot this gun several times and have hunted with it. I've just never had to buy the shells. I asked before I bought these and he swore up and down that he used 2 3/4. When I was cleaning it tonight I noticed that it only had 3" on the barrel so I called my dad back and asked him again what he used. he dug through his ammo box and everything was 3". So I'm going to pick up a couple boxes of 3" so the trip isn't a bust. I'm picking up a Husqvarna SxS next week so the 2 3/4 will get used up then.
