Only one that I am aware of, and that would be Ronnie Biggs. Biggs was part of the "great train robbery" in England during the 1960s. The police finally located him in Brazil, but they could not have him extradited back to the UK. Biggs had a Brazillian girlfriend that was pregnant and Brazillian law does not allow extradition for a parent of a Brazillian child.
The UK and much of the world knew of Biggs, but he remained untouchable as long as he stayed in Brazil. A few years back Biggs did return to the UK, he was in very poor health and wanted to die in his home country. The UK placed him in prison, and I assume he died there, not sure how it ended. ETA: Looks like there is a lot more to the story... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ronnie_Biggs He was caught and found guilty, later he escaped prison and made it to Australia. The police tracked him to Australia, but he had been tipped off and already fled to Brazil. An operation was staged and Biggs was kidnapped and smuggled into Barbados. Barbados did not have an extradition treaty with the UK so Biggs was released and returned to Brazil. In 2001 he went back to the UK and was sent to prison. He was finally paroled in 2009 for health reasons, and is still alive. |
