I just bought a Mosin Nagant M44 Carbine, its an Izhevsk and its in great shape. The only problem I have with it is that it will not feed the last round from the magazine. I load five, the first four shoot normally, then the fifth nosedives into the chamber and the bolt wont close. I tried working it back and forth a few times to no avail, and eventually just dropped the floor plate and inserted the last round directly in the chamber. Is this a normal problem on Mosin Nagants? If so, how can I fix it? I took a huge chunk out of the 200 yard gong at the range today, my shoulder is loving 7.62x54R. |

It doesn't respect you yet. Go beat on it with a hammer like a proper Russkie and let it know who's boss. This. Soviet guns understand one thing and one thing only - authority. Give it the gulag treatment - if it doesn't work, beat it till it does. If that still doesn't work, you need a bigger hammer. |

Guns are like women. They don't like grease in their cracks!
Seriously. I had a similiar issue with a 91/30 not wanting to feed the last round. I fixed it by taking it entirely apart, and cleaning all the petrified cosmoline off all the goodies. I think it had a hunk of hard grease inhibiting the follower/spring mechanism's movement. Whatever was wrong with it, the issue went away when I got rid of the cosmoline, and the rifle has worked fine ever since. |

Quoted: Could this be happening because I am loading the rounds one by one instead of using a stripper clip? I still have to find some of those for sale as the czech ammo I bought didn't come with them. I don't think that should matter. Make sure the mag spring and the associated components are well lubed and free of cosmoline, so they are not bound. |

Probably a weak mag spring coupled with a sticking round separator. There is a little spring loaded tab that lets only one round out of the mag each time you work the bolt. If it's sticking a weak mag spring may not be able to get the round past it. Listen to the wisdom here. Remove the entire mag assembly and clean the snot out of it. Drop the action of the stock and clean it good. Loading with or without strippers makes no difference.... |
