My brother just got out of basic and is now in rotc in college.  I'd like to get him something memorable.  Here's where I am so far, I bought him a decent bottle of whiskey( Woodford Reserve) and am going to have the bottle laser etched.  It's kind of a wide flat bottle, so I thought I would put US ARMY on the front and on the back I wanted to put,"From a proud brother to a brave soldier".  What do you guys think?

When I was in the service I would have loved to have gotten something like this.  I guarantee I would still have it.  It might not be full, but I would have the bottle.   I was thinking of telling him that we would break it open if and when he got deployed.

Just looking for opinions.  Any other great ideas would be appreciated.

Really nice idea.

Just one thought, buy a nice decanter, and laser etch that, so he can reuse it over the years.

Buy a nice reusable bottle for the engraving.  Don't waste it on cheap glass from the bottle.

Great idea. A custom/engraved fighting knife would be awesome, too.

He's got a good bro.

don't do the bottle, get it engraved on a flask instead. The bottle will just get lost/broken. Flask will serve for years.

I kinda like the flask idea.  He's only 21, so he's no whiskey expert.  I'm sure if it's free booze it's his favorite brand.

I like this idea better than the booze.  Not that the booze idea was bad just a nice engraved fighting knife would be better.

I was going to recommend the flask, but see that others beat me to it.

I've been given a flask and I never use it because bars don't let you bring your own and in most social situations if you bust out a flask people think you're a alcoholic. Knife is the way to go. I have over a dozen knives but you know what I say whenever someone gives me a new knife? "Awesome!"

In before someone points out that bourbon is not just whiskey.

Don't engrave something disposable.  It's like mongramed toilet paper.  The bottle's only going to last a few weeks anyhow, so what's the point?  I know kids tend to glorify alcohol, but there's really nothing super special in or on that bottle that makes it worth engraving.  Flask, glasses, decanter, anything durable would be a better choice.

But you know what gift I appreciate most from my brother?  Relax, have a few drinks, play some video games and act like kids again.

You don't need to engrave the bottle for it to be a nice gift.

Do both. On the bottle inscribe not to be opened until "X" date and on the flask "use
with care" or something like that.
