We've had these threads before, but can you believe how the local media here is trying to program us to make them seem normal and okay? They've been deemed legal, etc, so I guess I'm just sharing and mildly ranting.
I saw this on the news this morning and this thread http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=1&f=5&t=929536 reminded me of it again just now. Basically, we're going to stop you at random (well, not really random, every 4th, 5th, or more car depending on what you read here), detain you for no reason, check your papers, etc, and give you some pamphlets! http://www.kcci.com/automotive/20990237/detail.html# Authorities Plan Nighttime Traffic Safety Checkpoint POSTED: 1:52 pm CDT September 18, 2009 UPDATED: 3:33 pm CDT September 18, 2009 DES MOINES, Iowa –– Authorities plan to conduct a traffic safety checkpoint on Friday night in Des Moines. The nighttime checkpoint is expected to begin at 8:30 p.m. and 2:30 a.m. along 78th Street and Hickman Road. Authorities said the checkpoint will affect eastbound traffic, which will be narrowed to one lane. The timing of this checkpoint also coincides with the end of National Child Passenger Safety Week. Traffic safety checkpoints are legal in Iowa, authorities said. The vehicles that are stopped can expect a brief check by officers to determine whether licensing, registration, and vehicle inspection requirements are in compliance with Iowa law. Commuters will also receive educational material and handouts on traffic safety. Officers will pull one out of every five, or so, cars off the road to conduct the safety check. The Central Iowa Traffic Safety Task Force, Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau, Polk County Sheriff’s Office, Windsor Heights, Clive, Ankeny and Urbandale police departments, along with several other area state, county, and local law enforcement agencies are expected to be involved.

I'm heading to bed after dinner and a few beers. Good thing I'm smart enough on my own without the government's assistance to be home and not out driving.
For those not familiar with the area, the checkpoint is also at the bottom of a long hill with nowhere to turn and bypass it once you realize it's there. |
