Im 21, my back hurts SO BAD!

I was doing heavy dumbell presses a while ago and felt a pain in my side/back area.

I rested it, felt fine, went to the gym to work back... it came back.

I rested 2 weeks, went to the doctor, he told me only thing he could think of was a pulled muscle.  Told me just rest, I rested... it healed SLOWLY.

I went back to working out, it was just bothering me a little bit.  Now my mid/lower spine area is hurting so bad the last week.  If I dont lay down it hurts to even sit back in certain chairs.  Back pain SUCKS!!!!!!!

I even have pain in the back of my neck (this has been a common occurence in the past too)

Why is my body always injury prone and always in pain!?!

have you been avoiding back muscle exercises? you need switch off ab work and back work.

Go light... you're looking to tone, not build mass.

Well to be honest im not looking to tone anything.

I eat pizza, chocolate, and other crap all the time... yet I still maintain 10% body fat WITH NO CARDIO for years.

I bowled with some friends in a league for a year a couple years ago and started having lower back pains.  Try a good massage therapist a couple times a week and if that doesnt work try a chiropractor.

how are your hamstrings?  much lower back pain is caused by tight hams- i know from experience. i have to do stretches 2X per day in an attempt to overcome ridiculously shortened hamstrings

my back is fucked.  different pains in different places but one severely.  I still do stuff, landscape and play with kids and normal stuff.  but in little spurts and lots of pain killers.  the only advice i can give that i think everyone will agree with is even if you don't wanna exercise, dont wanna chiropractor, no physical therapy, no surgery....wanna pop pain pills.....okay.  but the one thing you should always do is stretch.  just a bit, and it'll really help.
i fucking hate it when people say their back was injured cause from then on, its a thorn in the side.  take care of it. you'll be okay, just dont pick up that sock or open that door!

My back has been fucked ever since gradeschool.

Too tall for desk chairs, locker basically inaccessible in time for class so I'd carry around a full backpack all day, and a number of other factors.

Adding to that, all of the jobs I've held have been no good for my back.

I'm young, and doing things even as simple as dishes or sweeping (with a push brook) for extended periods of time fuck me up

My back is fucked.  I got crushed when the bunker I was in collapsed on me from a incoming RPG in A-Stan.  They said that my lower back is "deformed do to trauma", but all I know is that it fucking hurts everyday.  I also suffered a head injury from the same incident, which caused a cyst to form in my Right Temporal Lobe.  I am 1 inch shorter then I used to be, I used to be 5ft8in, but I am now 5ft7in.  Sometimes the pain is so much that I just stay in bed all day, and it just makes me so stiff.  The VA said that they could do surgery on me, but they also said that due to where the injuries are I would have a 50/50 chance that I would be paralyzed after it.  I told them I'll take the pain for now then.  They give me pain meds, they do help, but they knock me out all day at the same time.

I walk with a limp, it may hurt, but I am walking.  I go to PT at the VA, sometimes I think I am getting better, but others it shows that I have a long road ahead.  Do to my injuries I have also lost a lot of muscle mass, but I try to keep my strength by doing pool exercises.

Turns out I didn't have such great form, and after a few months of doing it Mark Rippetoe's way my back has never felt better.  Last week I drilled 700 holes in a concrete floor, no back pain, not even sore.

Go to a reputable chiropractor.  Most back injuries are muscle injuries, learn to rehab them!  Look up Star Rehab Protocol.

How's  your DL and squat form?  I've just gotten over  a L4-S1 injury.  Took about 2 months of pain but after a bunch of readjustments from the chiropractor, stretching and some back work, it finally went away.  I had a similar bout two years ago.

When it comes to back pain, doctors are only good for two things, dispensing pills and cutting with a knife.

Regarding stretching, I have always been very flexible.  The stretches I do now mainly are during the days I workout.  I do the common leg stretches to stretch out my calves/hamstrings, also think it stretches out my back.

I do about 4-5 different stretches.

That has to be one of the most ignorant (excluding the current political debates) comments I have heard in a long time.    Maybe I misread your post, but I see nowhere in it where you had knowledge or even personal experience with a good Physical Therapist?

Chiropractors have their place and their role in treatment of injuries.  There are some extremely intelligent ones that don't subscribe to the "every ailment and disease is the result of misalignment of the spine" theories.   However, there are far more fruitloops out there that do high-impact / high velocity manipulations that will loosen your connective tissue around the joint over repeated manipulations resulting in a hypermobile joint, i.e. increase susceptibility to injury.    Not all muscle problems are the result of subluxations, and a good chiropractor will tell you that sometimes it is the muscle dysfunction / injury that caused the subluxation... If all you do is manipulate the joint, but don't fix the root cause, you are no better off.

Physical therapists play a key role in healing from injury.   Any chiropractor that doesn't encourage active physical therapy as a synergistic component of treatment and just wants to "crack" something several times a week is someone you need to stay away from.   Saying a PT are worthless for an active person is like saying a strength and conditioning coach is worthless for a pro-athlete... oh, wait, all the pro sports teams have strength and conditioning coaches, usually CSCS.

Good physical therapists play an invaluable role in recovery from sports injuries.   Good PT's also "adjust" subluxated joints when necessary, they just use different lingo than Chiros and focus more on getting the muscles to work properly to correct the root cause of the problem based on their evaluation and expertise.

.....and there is your answer. If you do not work your core as routinely as you would all other muscle groups, you WILL develope back issues. Those core muscles, front, sides, and back support EVERYTHING you do.

Well after having surgery to repair 2 ruptured discs in my back, and not giving it enough time to heal correctly I re-injured it, so now I have 2 bulging discs, spinal stenosis, arthritis in the previous surgical site. and some other things I cant remember right off the top of my head. I live with pain every day. I cant sit for periods of time nor can i stand for periods of time, i have pain that shoots down my legs from the nerves being pressed on. Ive been to physical therapy no better, even had the stens electrocution thing, it helps for short periods of time. I cant sleep well at night, hell I cant basically do anything I used to do. I chew on pain pills to get by everyday and somedays I don't think I will make through. So I feel for anyone who has true back issues.

You're correct, but that's also the reason to work your core. As you DL and Squat alot of of stress is placed on your core, muscles, and bone structure of the lower back area in particular. I'm also assuming that you're either going up in weight and/or reps/sets.  If so you will at one point NEED to dedicate some time to a true core workout as your core will simpy not be able to keep up with the work load because the stabalizing aspect is now no longer enough to keep up with the added workload.......I take this injury as a sign, barring any other unforseen more serious injury, that you've reached the point where just the stabalizing aspect isn't enough.....just one mans opinion, hope it helps you out!

True, you are getting some "core" muscle work when doing deads and squats.  However, there are a couple things to consider.  One, when heavy loads are placed on the body, the larger muscle groups tend to "take over" and compensate for some of the smaller weaker muscles, so those muscles may not see the same benefit, depending on the exercise, type of resistence used, number of repetitions, etc.

Do you wear a "weight belt" when you train?   While a great tool, you could be doing more damage than good if you wear it through out the workout.  While it is on, all the loads and forces your are subjecting your body to are being impacted by the belt.  Meaning, if you have a weaker muscle, say an oblique , than you should based on the weight you are moving, it will not get suffuciently taxed during the exercise to stimulate adaptation.   Therefore, it will remain weaker while you continue increasing the amount of weight you are moving as the larger "main" muscle groups get bigger and stronger...  i.e. you are setting yourself up for an injury.

You might also want to consider the analogy of 1 rep max bench press.  You can train "bench press" by itself and improve.  But most people will see a markedly better result and bigger strides in their 1RM if they also separately and specifically train the other muscles involved besides chest, i.e. biceps, triceps, lats and delts.   So just doing squats or deads will give you some benefit, but not nearly the same as if you specifically trained your core muscles, including abs and lower back on their own.
