Rap music:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GlKL_EpnSp8 and... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3pBtsIm2k5E (not all bad) |
| I like plenty of hip hop, but not much of it has been made in the past 10 years. Modern beats suck, most of the lyricists can't hold a candle to Tupac Shakur or vintage Ice Cube and that autotune shit is everywhere. That goes for rock music too. Personally, I'd still rather listen to Lil Wayne than Nickleback if those were my only options. |

Typical Cats - Reinventing the Wheel Most rap is shit these days, though. I prefer those that have great beats and creative wordplay. Which is none of any of the mainstream acts. |

I'm a bass player, so I appreciate a good beat like that. There is some good underground hip hop out there. I love The Roots. As popular music, the genre has hit an all time low. Nas was right when he said Hip Hop is dead. The phony gangster shit is pathetic. |

Nonsense, this upstanding African American citizen is teaching children about the second amendment.
this gentleman is just informing children on the dangers of alcohol consumption. Finally, these fine young men are just educating children on the importance of hard earned money. See, nothing wrong here. You right wing extremist are just over reacting.

I think as long as people understand that the current bunch (and maybe for the past 10 years) are nothing more than thugs/scum cashing in on a trend, no problem.
Early hip/hop/rap had something to say. While I don't condone their actions or lifestyle, NWA were talking about what their reality was in the ghettos in the LA area. They painted a picture of what it was like in the late 80s to early 90s in towns were you have to duck every time a car went by. Public Enemy, while a touch anti-white, actually had intelligent lyrics and made some valid points. Chuck D is a smart man who knows how to say something that has meaning. If you go back even further to acts like Run-DMC, Kurits blow, Grandmaster Flash, etc..their message was uplifiting and meant to motivate and empower. Fast foward to the late 90s, and it is all just a big joke; The lyrics get stupider and stupider with every pre-fab "artist". EVERYTHING about the style is now predictable and has ZERO musical/cultral value. Rock is the same way now also. It is what happens when people are more concerned about being rich and famous that about making music. There are still Rap/Hip hop/Rock acts out there that have great lyrics and music..they are just not on major lables. You need to dig around the web to find them. |

Quoted: I listen to rap, and the lyrics have made me into a psycho. OMG! ![]() I bet back in the 50's you would have tried to ban Elvis on the radio too. I learned from Ray Luv after they caught my homie with a slug in his back, that when they mug me to cock my shit and mug back. |

Honestly, not ALL rap is bad. You can only hope your kids find music with lyrics like this to listen to. And he is very popular, or as my old roommates used to say "That brother's got mad skills".
Open up the gate Let my prayer rise up And i struggle every day just to get myself up For the force of gravity that keeps sinking my ship Time again one is bound to slip We rip through these days We flip through the age Survive stay alive we won't trip in the haze Lost in the maze I know it's just a phase But i dread it dread it dread it I won't let my life go to waste I'm a struggla Rise and never fall cause i been through it all So ask yourself and think twice Would you want to live your life Oh we pay the cost The pain and all the loss Sell the youth them dreams of ease and fame Will be a breeze when you got a big name Cash fast fast cars to escape all of the pain Escape your brain and so it stays the same We would not lay down We won't live in vain We won't be drained And i got to maintain I won't let my life go to waste I'm a struggla Rise and never fall cause i been through it all So ask yourself and think twice Would you want to live your life Oh we pay the cost The pain and all the loss There's something wrong with the system That leaves it's people victim Keep on slipping can't seem to catch up Try to rise at night but my legs they stay stuck There's something wrong in the system That leaves it's children victim .. I won't let my life go to waste I'm a struggla Rise and never fall cause i been through it all So ask yourself and think twice Would you want to live your life Oh we pay the cost The pain and all the loss Oh we pay the cost The pain and all the loss Rise and never fall cause i been through it all So ask yourself and think twice Would you want to live your life Oh we pay the cost The pain and all the loss ... Open up the gates let my prayer rise up Oh we pay the cost The pain and all the loss -Ben |

I'm not a big fan, but its ludicrous to say rap is any more "harmful" than any other media form. Do you think Death Metal and Black Metal make kids into Satanists? Do video games make kids violent?
I think you are confusing cause and effect. Rap is not a cause of criminal behavior. It is a product of urban culture, not a cause. The lyrics and content of rap are a symptom of the problem. They are not the problem... |

They are not the problem... I think some people are effected by it. Not everyone, but a few can be influenced by it. If the effected person has a leadership role in his group of friends/community or he is seen as the cool kid that everyone wants to be, then the messages from the bands could possibly influence others through this leader figure. People will act like him/her just to be considered cool. Edit: This isn't the case all the time. I have listened to Death Metal and am not a satanist. I have listened to Rage Against the Machine who talks about "How I could just kill a man" and other violent topics. Do I act upon them? No. |

I actually listen to quite a bit of rap –– I can associate with some parts of it, but most of it is just a study in the enemy. I totally understand the distrust of authority, that they perceive as having failed them. I don't get the complete lack of respect for life, or the violence against women. Flipping through my iPhone, you'll see Snoop Dogg, Chamillionaire, Nelly, NERD, Akon, Ludacris, MIMS, and Outkast. I typically like the older stuff - it seems like today's rap is a caricature of all the offensive parts of rap 10 years ago. Its rare that I find a new rap album that's worth a shit. Hip-hop is getting a bit better, though.

Music must have rhythm, harmony and melody. It's not music if one of these is missing. Rap only has rhythm, so it's only musical in the sense that a jackhammer is.
It normalises poor English (if you could even call it that). The lyrics do not appeal to the intellect. Most of it is repetitive. Some of it may be humorous but on the whole it is obnoxious. Especially when blasted in public- in restaurants and in stores, at events, and in cars. |
