I'm told that opening a new credit account will reduce one's credit score.

Is there a certain amount of time (weeks, months) that the credit score will be lower?

I don't think so. Closing an account hurts you more.

I closed a bunch of accounts I never used in 2007, and it dropped my score by 40 pts for a few months, because it lowered by debt to credit ratio.
