I have a weird issue going on with my home computer. I thought my monitor crapped out on me. When it would go into hybernation and I move the mouse to display the screen it would blink for a second and then go black. I would do it again and the same thing would happen. This was the original Dell 17" monitor that came with the the computer 6 years ago so I figured it was tits up. I grabbed one of the 15" monitors from work and plugged it up. Worked fine so I threw the 17" away. Fast forward a few days later and my daughter comes home to use the computer, she switches users and all of the sudden the screen goes black and says "can not display this video mode" or something like that. Now its totally black, so I shut down the computer and restart. Displays just fine. Switch users again and it does the same thing. What the hell is the problem?

Also, I need a 4 pin 1394 port installed on my computer. How hard is it to do and where can I get one?

Try lowering the video resolution and updating the video drivers.

At least you know it's not the monitor  sorry, couldn't resist.  You have a video driver, Windows software, or video hardware problem; the trick is going to be to isolate it.

For starters, if/when you regain video turn off the hibernation and screen saver.  Next, go to the windows update site and make sure you have all of the recommended software updates installed.  While you're there check to see if there are any video driver updates.

If that doesn't fix the problem, go into Device manager and find your video hardware entry.  Make sure that it says it's working properly and isn't conflicting with any other devices.  If that's OK, go onto the internet and find the latest driver for your video hardware and load it.

If that doesn't work, you will need to disable your on-board video and install an aftermarket video card.

Good luck!

You likely have a video driver problem. Seems the issue only occurs when switching users correct? Install the latest video driver. Is the computer going into standby or hibernation? Guess you mixed up the two as waking up from hibernation cannot be done by moving the mouse. Standby and Hibernation are not perfect technologies. I see lots of video issue and networking issues with my customers and alot of time occur after waking up from standby or hibernation. On top of installing new drivers, download the latest firmware, and also if possible, read the "fixes" new drivers and BIOS will install, your problem just may be in their.
