I've decided to pony up and get an AR style rifle. But I'm worried about the cheaper guns on the market. I have read some posts on here that it is cheaper to get the parts and assemble.
I have lots of experiance with firearms, just not AR's so I'm looking for ya'lls input on what to buy and cheapest places to get them. Also what kits have which parts so I don't order a bunch of duplicate parts. I know I want a flat top so I can put either a red dot or holographic sight on it. and in .223. And collapsible (sliding) stock. And a shorter carbine barrel. The rest is unknown at this point. Oh and here is the tough part..... need it all for under $700.00. Doable? |

If you want to build it yourself, make sure you check out the BIY Forum

Sure, but you'll need to get some used items. I'd stick with a new bolt carrier and lower, but a used barrel, upper receiver, sights, stock, etc. should work just fine. Just try to get a barrel with a decent round count if you can.
M&A parts has complete bolt carriers for $125, fwiw http://www.m-aparts.com/productsDetail.asp?id=549 Essential Arms has stripped lowers for $100 + shipping http://essentialarms.com/LOWERSANDPARTS.HTML Aimsurplus has Superior Arms stripped lowers for $89.95 + shipping http://www.aimsurplus.com/acatalog/Superior_Arms_S-15_AR15_.223_Receiver.html Good luck, and fwiw, once you start building/buying these things it's hard to stop. My wife made the comment a few months ago how she couldn't understand how anybody could need more than one or two AR's and how it'd be absolutely crazy to have more than 4. I just kept my mouth shut since I've got a 24" rifle, 2 16" carbines, plus an 11.5" SBR with a can and another 2 complete lowers sitting in the safe.
Hey, I've got 4 boys and they're going to need to hunt/plink/have something for HD someday... |

Certainly doable. The frustating part is waiting on the parts to come in. take a hard look at ADCOfirearms.com for a good deal of your parts - they are competitive, carry RRA and CMT parts, and charge a $4 flat fee for shipping which can keep your costs down. Great to work with and they will get it to you as soon as possible. Understand that anywhere you order from likely has several weeks wait. If it was me I would avoid Blackthorne, they tend to be a crap shoot on quality. |
| Del-ton is a site sponser and they have great kits with awesome customer service. Their kits are $465 without a lower so go to AIM and get a $89 stripped lower, now you have some extra in that $700 to work with to get optics or ammo. Primary arms has some great quality knock off Aimpoints for the ~$100 range. |
| Try Here they put out a good quality kit and did have various 16" kits in stock and ready to ship. (just call and make sure they haven't all been snatched up) just pick up a lower and you will stay under your $700 budget and have a gun with all new parts and a warranty. |

Just be aware there is a bit of backlog left from the panic buying, as they were the only supplier I noted who did not raise their prices to screw folks. |

I liked that site, if I order the kit all I need to get shooting is a stripped lower and mags and ammo right? I am worried there are parts that might not come that I would have to buy after. |

its possible but you will find it difficult to resist spending the extra $ in getting the nicer upgrade pieces: stock, upgraded trigger, pistol grip, sights, free-floating the barrel, muzzle break or flash suppressor, etc
It was extremely satisfying to do my first build, I did it completely from scratch (minus the BCG), you're in for a lot of fun |

I picked up a new Anvil Arms stripped lower for 110.00 and have priced out some parts that come to right around 311.00 bucks to build out the lower. This does not include FFL fees or shipping and tax. Buy on the EE here with out of state vendors and save the tax and you can also get free shipping on about half of the parts. The parts I priced are all new and great quality. Magpul MOE stuff is GTG and is cheap considering the quality and the finish on the Anvil lower is superb
Have fun! |

If you buy one of their complete kits, then yes - a stripped lower, mags and ammo are all you will need. Doing this, you should easily be able to finish the gun itself for under $700. There's a nice step-by-step tutorial on putting the parts in the lower receiver in the AR Discussions section of this forum. Oh, +1 for J&T quality. eta: Link to the build guide |
