No grizzlies in the northeast, but there are plenty of black bears.  I hike a lot, and am planning a multi-day thing in the White Mountains once the weather shows some signs of clearing.

I know my Walter P22 won't cut it if I happen to run into an ornery black bear defending the cubs, or a startled one that's ready to fight, but what about a Sig P239 9mm?  Glock 30, .45?

I'd go with the 45.

black bears wont hurt you. dont you watch TV?

For any animal over 100 lbs, carry 45 acp. For a brown bear, I would want a 12 guage or at least a 44 mag.

Those choices, I'd go 45, but I wouldn't worry too much about caliber selection. The odds of seeing a black bear in the white mountains are slim though certainly possible. Highly unlikely that you would have a confrontational scenario, but I hear ya.

I hike a lot too, commonly pretty deep in the Maine boonies. I've seen no bears while hiking anywhere on the AT or elsewhere (in state). Barring landfills and dumps, they usually avoid human scent like the plague.

Black bears? Bang pots and pans. Whistle. Tie a bell on your shirt.

I think all of your options are under gunned.
