With a couple CCW threads floating around, I was wondering at what age most people get them. I turned 21 back in May and got mine in June. My major motivation was that you have to have the permit to get a handgun in CT.

I was 23. It was about 100$ for the permit and 50$ for a handgun class which you have to take before you can get the permit. The permit lasts for four years. I am now 25!!

I was 72 when I applied. Maybe, I'll get it before I'm 74. [:(!] 71-Hour_Achmed wrote:

So far I'm batting 1000 -- no cops asked, no cops searched me, no cops noticed, or at least no cops cared. Even when I deliberately seek them out and annoy them with questions. [:p] Or when they stop and shoot the shit with me for 20 minutes in the middle of the local Safeway. [8D] Hope you get your CCW permit before you turn 100. Luck to you.

In Alabama, you have to be 23 to get one. However, I was 24 when I got mine. I got into handguns late in life. I was 24 when I got my CCW; the year I moved across the river into a free state. Now SC has a CCW in place, but SC and GA got into a pissing contest, so there's no reciprocity.

I thought 23 was just a mobile county rule: sheriff can set the age ??????

Peasants in Ohio aren't allowed to CCW. We have the ever-present police here to protect us. http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?id=90318

21 is as early as you can get one in GA. Funny thing is I bought my first house when I was 20, but could not buy a handgun until 21! [beer]

Which states have CCW and what are the minimum ages? we don't get no CCW down here [>Q] [>(]

I was 18. My Dad bought my carry pistol for me, because even though it is legal to carry at 18 in Indiana, you cannot buy a handgun until you are at least 21 ~ go figure. Tyler

I was 27. They made it legal in NC, and I applied the next month. In NC, if you have ccl you forgo the Brady nics. Nice when your at a gunshow and the nics is down.

It's the same in SC. That's what first interested me in a concealed carry permit. When I bought my first rifle, I had to wait three days before picking it up. While I was talking to the sales person in frustration (since I didn't understand the process at that time), I saw them sell two rifles to CCW holders without the NICS check. After watching them leave without a hassle, I became curious. After I get my permit (not if, when), I'll appreciate going to gun shows. As it stands now, unless I'm buying from a local dealer with a table who I can pickup a firearm from later, I can't buy because of the three day NICS delay.z

18. If you have your CCW here, you can walk into any store and buy a handgun and walk right out the door with it. No waiting.

got mine on sept. 11, 2001, at age 32. no foolin!! took the morning of the 11th off to pick it up at the county clerk. slept in until about 10am that morning, walked down stairs, turned on the tv and about pooped myself. i threw my gear in the car and got my ass in motion. after picking the ccw up, i made my way to my friend's house with my kimber .45 in lap. the boys were waiting all geared up and had my HK 93 for me. i'll never forget that day.

First got mine two days after my 21st birthday. In Madison County Alabama I just went to the courthouse, paid my $5 and filled out the questionaire. No fingerprints, no bs classes, no hassles. They just copied my DL and needed the picture. The permit came in the mail about 3 weeks later. After moving to FL, I waited several months because it's kind of a hassle (relatively speaking). Paid $75 for the class, maybe another $75 for the permit, had to get fingerprinted, blah blah blah, hang around and wait and it finally showed up about 2 months later. Sweet home Alabama is much better!

Hopefully, I'll have mine this year, and I'm 25. Finances keep goofing me up, but it's looking like I'll be able to do it soon! M@

Rec'd mine when I was 24. FL used to have permits by county, then in 1986 (thereabouts) it became a state-issued license. Started as a 3-year license, with prints/pictures required for every renewal. A few years ago it became a 5-year license with only an updated picture required (which means prints are always on file).

Are there any exceptions to 21 y/o age limit for handguns? I'm pretty sure that is federal law per 1968 GCA. Is there some kind of loop hole that allows people under 21 to purchase side arms?

I've been carrying illegally since 1971. Usually in the glove compartment but on me also. I used common sense and have never had a problem nor have I ever had the occasion to use except once but then thats why you carry. I decided to get legal when I got into security in 1997 and carry in the open. There have been mental midgets that have told me 'yeah, I'll remember you old man you think your a big man carrying that gun but you won't always have it with you old man' Yes, mental midgets are alive and moving amongst us.
