I am looking at getting a good benchmade.  Most of them they have at Sportsmans Warehouse are automatic ones.  I just wanted to check the laws on whether it is legal to carry an automatic knife in SC.  A recommendation  for one would be great to.  Thanks.

I thought it was illegal to sell switchblades in the US?

Bladeforums.com has an entire forum for automatic knives.

In Minnesota, it seems blade laws differ from city to city. Most are oddly worded which can result in just about any knife being classified as illegal. I specifically went with a knife that did not have a button or slide type release. I picked up the Kershaw Ken Onion Leek which opens crazy fast. It uses a thumb stud or by pushing on the hilt. This seems to avoid most of the crazy city ordiances, except my hometown's which is written to seemingly exclude any type of mechanical opening or hand or wrist movement. Since a lever is a basic machine, pretty much all knives are illegal.

My thought is that if you are getting hasseled for the knife in your pocket, then you did somethign else wrong.

I totally agree! I made the mistake of buying a benchmade stryker initially.
The Benchmade is a great knife but feels like a lead weight in your pocket.
The Kershaw is so much lighter, razor sharp and fast. I carry it everywhere.

No problem with ownership in Florida. I own several and carry one regularly.

It is illegal to import them.  You'll have to look up your state and local laws because some states allow carry, some allow ownership only, and some don't even allow possession.

In SC it is illegal to carry.

As a Firefighter/Paramedic and sworn municipal officer I can order one, even in Occupied IllAnnoys.

I choose not to, just from an explanation hassle if I go out of state as well as the chance of losing a $$$ knife.
