So do any of you guys know what a reasonable hourly rate is for unskilled labor these days? I’ve been thinking about putting out a craigslist add offering to help with any odd jobs that people need to have done in my area on weekends. Has anyone out there tried this?

I have a very good “day job” and make decent money, but the wife only works part time because we have to toddlers. And we’ve got another baby on the way… So I’d like to find a way to pick up extra cash on the side to pay off a lingering small balance on a credit card and get some savings built up for when baby comes and the wife goes on maternity.

The trouble is it would be difficult to go out and take a second job, because my main job frequently requires me to put in extra hours, and I am on call one week a moth. Nothing too major, but it would make it difficult for a second employer to scheduled around my first one. And I’m salaried at my main job so there is never any overtime.

I don’t want the responsibility of trying to run my own side business, I just want to go out and provide muscle for a few hours a week and make a little side cash.

Any other suggestions for a low-responsibility, low-stress was to make extra cash?

My neighbor pays his tree-trimming crew $12/hour before taxes. When he loans them out to other guys (building fences, finishing concrete, landscaping, etc.) they get paid $12/hour cash, plus lunch.
