Son and I attended the local town's city wide garage sales and store sales blowout yesterday. An annual event called "Crazy days".
Anyhow, we bought a lot of used stuff....mostly useful, at the garage sales. Wasn't as full blown as in years past, but was a respectable turnout driving back and forth between yard/garage sales and walking the sidewalk tables businesses had set out along mainstreet. Son and I bounced around looking at womens clothes and baby gear/toys/clothes, snapping up a few choice bits of 'man' gear. Stuff like tools, ammo, electronics,...weird stuff too when found, such as a turkey candelabera and decorative brass knick-nacks . Was fun. Was at one old fellow's garage sale(lots of cool 'man-stuff'), and was asked if I was interested in a pistol? I go with the fellow inside and he shows me a nickle plated S&W model 15 wearing faux pearls! I ask why he wants to sell his fairly decent old six-shooter? His reply being that he had decided to sell his house, and move into the fairly new , kind of ritzey retirement community. Firearms are not allowed in this little fenced and gated retirement haven!!!
I know the old guy fairly well, both members of the same community, and he being one of my substitute teachers in many grades and subjects in my younger days. A local piller of the town, business owner and council member, retired. Was honored he gave me the opportunity to buy his revolver. I give him my favorite FFL dealer gunstore owner's phone number to get an appropriate price estimate. Also hooked him up with 'Auction Arms' and 'Gunbroker' as online sources for what the revolver might be worth in real world buck$. The gentleman called me yesterday evening and I went and paid him his price for the Smith. And received with much honor his old Model 15 and it's original wood grips, plus the pistol case and a couple partial boxes of .38 specials.
He was quite happy, no real sellers remorse or anything like that. Also gave me a quite conservative price on the revolver and extras. He had made his decision to forego any future gun ownership to live in the gated community, and that was that......he gave up his guns!!!! Thinking about the deal....it would be a tough decision for me to make!! I think I would stick with my firearms to the grave! I do sort of understand the retirement community's no guns rule. Dementia, and alzhiemers, and whatever other mental disorders of the elderly making guns a potential bad thing. But still, that just must plain suck to give up your firearms |

It was a 'no firearms' rule in the assisted living condo's my parents spent their final years in too.
I myself was a bit shocked the retirement community banned firearms as well. Most of the people there are fully functional yet. However it is setup as an assisted living community as well. That's just a subject related to getting old I am not prepared to face! |
