I have been an avid shooter all my life and am just starting to hunt, I have always seen people with gun racks in the back windows of their trucks, but have never seen a rifle/shotgun in any here in NJ, just bows hanging on them. What is the purpose/legality issue for having a gun rack and displaying your firearms in the window?

30 years ago when I lived in NJ, many of the "Pineys" had them.

I wouldn't even consider today.

I have a gun rack in my pickup, but have never put a gun in it.  Anything heavier than a 10/22 will damn near pull the rack down.

It does, however, work great for holding fishing rods.  Beats getting them smashed in all the crap I have behind the seats.

That's what the bed of the truck is for...

I still see alot of old guys with them in their trucks, but the law says firearms are to transported in cases...? So, are they obsolete?

Here in the PRNJ, you cannot have a firearm in the passenger compartment unless it is in a case that is not accessible to the occupants.  If the gun is in the pax compartment, the ammo must be in another and, iirc, the glovebox doesn't count.

Yet another reason I want to move across the river into PA.

Still have one.  Just haven't put it in my new truck yet.  Handy for 4' levels and hanging backpacks, hats, coats or soft briefcases.  Occasionally you'll see one with a rifle or shotty during hunting season but not at all like 20 years ago.

Most people don't put guns in them because the cops will pull them over and fuck with them. It can be illegal in some states to have a firearm displayed in that manner in your vehicle.

Personally, I don't want people to know that I have a firearm inside my vehicle. Not only to keep thieves away, but to keep scarred soccer moms from calling the cops on me (even if it is perfectly legal to have a firearm in a gun rack).

A gun rack is a sign that says "BREAK MY WINDOWS!".

I've seen it happen.

I saw a guy down here with one of these tubes in the rear window rack of his pick-up.

I laughed my ass off.

I see them all the time around here, but only a few are empty - but then again, there are at least two people who have a permanently mounted, full size Confederate flag on their pickups that I meet on my way home from work every day.

Mostly, they've got old beatup .22s, and occassionally a Mini-14 or boltgun.  The ranchers just about all carry a .22 in their farm vehicle for coyotes and such.  There's one guy though, that has a jacked up Dodge that sits about 5' off the ground - beautiful truck, if a *bit* impractical - that has an AK with a 30-rounder in it.

As far as I know, there are no state laws concerning transport of loaded long guns in Arkansas.  I was let off by a cop once, because AR law defines "firearm" how most people would define "handgun".  I had a shotty behind the seats that he spotted when he walked up to the driver's side window.

They are used for their intended purpose on plenty of Indian reservations out west.
