I am pretty good about spyware/malware/virus's and haven't had a virus in years.  Typical spyware here and there.  I keep being told to switch from IE to Mozilla firefox.
Why should I?

I've been using Firefox for about a year and I think it's light years ahead ie.

I enjoy all the addons you can get for Firefox.

Add-ons, themes, timely updates...Firefox has it all over IE.

Firefox is worth it just for AdBlock Plus, IMO.

The only ads that I allow are the ones here at arfcom.  Haven't seen a real ad in years.

No matter what version of MS IE, there is always some bugs in it. I think MS never give the programmers the time to fix errors in them because by the time they fix the errors, MS is ready to introduce a new version. Firefox has far less bugs.

Ever since the latest update to IE, I can't stand to use it.  The new version is so slow, even on a new PC.  I've experimented with Chrome and think it has potential once Google finishes polishing it (no pun intended).  For now I'm content to use Firefox on my home pc.  I attempted to load it to a work PC but ran into issues since the Virtual Desktop program that we use for entering our timesheets and checking our TOWP and Sick Leave balances only support IE.

No Script addon.

Plain and simple.

Even if you go to the most fucked up porno sights, you wont get anything (if you run it properly). Since I got Firefox, I haven't had so much as a TRACKING COOKIE put onto my computer

ETA

Its also built on a more stable code, whereas IE7 was just bandaids and bandaids on top of crap. You also have a huge user base providing input that they actually listen too. Bug fixes are more common, and upgrades are far more common, so that those vulnerabilities that IE6/7 have don't reach critical mass.

It took me a looooong time to upgrade, but now that I am used to Firefox, I cant believe I didn't move to it sooner.

I work at a school which somehow has allowed some kind of malware into the system. Firefox seems to be immune to this crap. Explorer is not.

In terms of internet speed:

Firefox is simply faster for me. As in, loading web pages.

In terms of resource usage:

On slow/old computers, IE loads quicker. On fast computers, Firefox does.

Firefox also uses more RAM. But, if you even have a slightly modern computer with a dual core and 2GB of RAM, this point is moot.

Go with Firefox. Safer, and loads quicker.

Well you can continue to use the world's most insecure piece of dog shit, and when you get hosed (not IF, when), you can pay me my normal consulting rate to clean your box.  Use shitty insecure software, pay the price.

Firefox is customizable.
You can get FREE hundreds of different add-ons that change how it works and how it looks.  This is the non computer geek reason.
Geek reason: It has better support. when a vulnerability is found it is reported and fixed.  This makes it more secure from word go.  The add-ons allow you to make it even more secure.  You can make it as paranoid as you are if not more so.
ETA: it's also where all the innovation is.  You know tabs? IE copied them from Firefox.  Firefox is where the new stuff is born for IE to poorly copy.

I think the reason you haven't had any malware to speak of is that you:
1) Understand which sites NOT to go to
2) Understand abnormal behavior of the OS resulting from malware

The above reasons are the most important in protecting one's self from malware infection of MS products.  And is the largest focus when I talk with my customers.

Now, why to switch?  Lots of reasons. The biggest reason for most is customizing.  My #1 reason is ease of backup and management because all the important stuff is in a single folder. The most important for all is better security.

i use firefox exclusively for many reasons, got far less probs than ie, its not perfect but runs much better. like everyone else says it does block a lot of the unwanted crap and has done good about it for me. internet explorer is like a ticking time bomb, so it is rare that i use it.

I really don't see any significant advantage to either browser. If IE works fine for you, stick with it.

I've been supporting a web-based application professionally for 2.5 years now, and I have seen more infected IE users, but I've also seen far more IE users than FF users, so the security arguments just don't hold much water from where I sit. The end user has to specifically allow any potentially harmful client side code in both browsers.

For speed, the only thing I've noticed is that FF3 and 3.5 are significantly slower to load that IE6/7/8 on all of my work machines. In terms of rendering a page, I haven't noticed much different.

All the skinning crap just seems like crap to me. I want my browser to look like what it is, and that's it. Someone mentioned a special add-on in firefox that would disable scripting; you can do that natively in IE if you configure it. You can disable cookies in both browsers. The ad blocking stuff just doesn't have much appeal; I've gotten used to ignoring ads anyways. The only add-on in FF that seems worth having is Firebug, but that's really only useful for developers.

As far as bugs, both browsers have them in quantity. I've dealt with several FF scripting and rendering bugs that have just driven me crazy.

I use Firefox for some add on specific functions, but I switched to Chrome a few months ago due to the "weight" of firefox on my netbook.  Chrome is just less resource intensive and faster.  If it had all the add ons FF had, I would ditch FF too.  Either one is light years ahead of Internet Exploder in terms of speed and safety.
