Around what size does hail need to be to threaten your property?  for example your vehicle, roof, windows etc.

I would say about golf-ball size.

Yep.  I hear tales of a major hailstorm here where softball-sized hail was going through roofs.

About golf ball sized.  We've got a lot of adjusters in Witchita right now because of the grapefruit sized hail they received, it just destroyed the cars it hit.

For the roof on your house it depends on what type of material and the age of it.

as small as a grape can damage an old roof.

I work at an auto auction, and we got a shipment of about 150 brand new Suzuki XL7's, and the majority of them had hail damage from a storm at the other auction where they had been stored previously.

They had dents all over them, about the size you'd get in a steel target from a .45.  The hail wasn't big.  Nickel sized at the most.

Not just size but speed.  Just as there are updrafts which are necessary for formation of hail, there are also downdrafts which can really increase the energy.  And density varies, some hailstones have a lot of air and are pure white, others have intensive layers of remelt and are hard, clear ice.  These do more damage, naturally.

But usually, anything bigger than a quarter will leave dents.  Stuff larger than a golfball will take out windows.

my car received hundreds of dents friday from a hail storm, hail was just bigger than a quarter, with some larger dents, so i'm assuming some large chunks thrown in for fun.

also extensive damage to the siding on the house, shredded a bunch of screens, broken windows, the drivers side rear view mirror was busted on my car, etc.

Quarter sized hail can put dents in car sheet metal.   Way back when, when cars were made of heavier gauges of sheet metal, it took

golf ball sized hail to do the same thing.

But the cool thing is that small dents made by hail can and often will smooth themselves out with time and a lot of heat/cold cycles.  Hot days,

cool nights,  the more the better.  I've seen cars that had NO dents in them a few years after they'd taken hundreds of tiny hail dents,

and there had never been any attempt to repair them.

Sheet metal has a memory.  Hot/cold cycles will make it remember the shape it's supposed to be.

Type of roof. Pitch of the roof, and angle of attack of the hail / wind speed are also factors.Too many variables to give a good answer.

Dibs on anything not hail damaged.

I witnessed a storm like that a few years ago north of Amarillo. What a fucking mess that one made. Kept me out in the field for 6 weeks straight

Anything over nickle size can start to damage a standard 3-12 pitched, asphalt shingle roof. Cars, I would think quarter size and you will not be buffing it out
