I have a 3 Gs iPhone and here's the deal.
If you use an existing photo from your Camera Roll, it keeps it's own copy even if you delete the original. I think it makes a smaller copy for the Contact entry. If you open a Contact and go to Edit, then Add a Photo, it uses that photo and it does not appear in the Camera Roll, so you can only delete it from the Contact where the photo was taken. I hope that is clear enough. |
