| So I am going to build a bicycle here in the near future and I was wondering what steel should I use? I dont want the thing to be a tank but I also dont want it to fall apart on me either. So what do you guys think? |

American tubes by TruTemper - When I had my custom road bike built many years ago I was shown several different tube sets. The TruTemper were the best of the lot. Seperately wraped and oiled and kept from rolling around in the box. The tube set from Italy were rusted and rolling loose in the box. After seeing this I chose the American set.
Good luck and be sure to post pics when it is done. P.S. You might want to look into obtaining a jig for your project. |
If you're going to go all out, why not carbon fiber? http://www.bmeres.com/carbonframe1.htm
I've wanted to build a carbon fiber mountain bike frame, but I'd guess it's a HUGE endeavor with lots of opportunities for costly do-overs. Have you considered aluminum? I'd guess steel would be easier to work with (welding, etc.), but I would think you could get a sufficiently strong bike that would still be lighter than steel if you use big enough aluminum tubing. |
