I was looking at Goggle Earth in the Fort Sumter SC area..I noticed if you go South West {I think} just inland from the fort, it looks like a couple of large earth works. Anyone live in that area that can identify these earth works?.................one is a semi circle the other is a square shaped area.
They may be part of the old fort, but I would like to know for sure. |
|
I have been to the South many times.....I lived in NC for a couple years......In the Wilson area.great place with a lot of History...............Fort Fisher was one of the favorite spots to go when I lived there. That and The Bentonville Battlefield.
I also lived in Florida and Texas.................I was what you would call a Damned Yankeee!!! |

| I have lived in the Charleston area my whole life. I have no clue what it is. we even take the boat over that beach, we just go further down. actually I am heading there today. the semi circle is probably dunes, I will check on the square one. it could be earth works Castle Pinkney(sp?) is in the harbor and they have let it get covered with brush and crap. |
|
The map is very cool...............it almost looks like the Semi Circle could be from Fort Johnson?...or part of it.........I am sure Weather/storms/hurricanes have taken a toll on the earth works too. ..............Spoils.When I was stationed in Cape May they put all the spoils on the CG Base.the left roads so we could still get to the bunkers but you could not see but 40 feet between the spoil areas.
Man I would love to be able to walk around that area!!!!! |

As you can see in this map from 1860, that piece of land did not exist. That may be dredgings from the harbor similar to the ones you would find near the ICW. http://i327.photobucket.com/albums/k472/kbadphoto/fortsumter.png Cool..one of the battery's carries my family name. |

I used to work at Ft Johnson back in the mid-90s, and my boss's boss was a huge history buff and knew all there was to know about the area. The only part of the original Ft Johnson that is there are some cisterns and a powder magazine. All the dry land between Ft Johnson and Ft Sumter was not there during the Civil War. |

OK I read up a little and I noticed part of the fort is still visible................They say relics are still found on the island!!!!! |

Some were even freeing their fabulous fun bags. |

| Also, just a few miles south, along the coast from Sumter is a light house that is literally, right in the middle of the ocean. The beach eroded, but oddly enough, the water isn't all that deep. Hell we were about a mile off the coast and I was still in waist deep water. |

The same thing was happening in Cape May, you could walk under very large bunkers that used to be on land. We could walk right under them with plenty of head room.
The Rifle range butts used to be inland a bit......when I left in 86 the water was almost to them at high tide and were unusable...........I think I was with the last bunch that ever shot at 1000 yards at Cape May. The Patriot Point site has a sister ship of the one I was on when I was in the CG........The USCGC Ingham..I was on the USCGC Duane...........I hope to go down and see her some time! |

I spent a year at a nearby exclusive prep school..a lot of the kids in my class had family names that go way back...Pinckney, Gadsden etc...even my middle name comes from one of the big nearby plantations but I doubt my family owned anything

Fort Sumter was an awesome way to spend the day, I even argued with the "tour guide" on the boat ride out because of something their recorded story of the war proclaimed that I thought to be inaccurate. Anyway, the Fort is a lot of fun. It's not very big, and there isn't much left there but you really should get out and see it. I wish I could have spent more time there, and next time I'll go earlier so I can hitch a ride back on a later boat.
It's just one of those things, like visiting a Revolutionary or Civil War battlefield. Even though there isn't much to "see" you kinda take it all in. |

Did you ever walk around at the area we are talking about?? A lot of area like that up here, have been fenced off and posted so you can go look around.........very sad, that you cant get a feel for what it was like to be in those forts and earth works. You gota hand it to the men that built and served in them.....no comforts at all....I bet the sand fleas are terrible there!! |

I was there two years ago for a wedding and we did the dinner boat cruise thing there at dusk. It was just awesome to sail through there and imagine what it was like back then with big sailing ships exchanging cannon fire with the shore, then going over to Battery Park and seeing the historical gun emplacements.
I wish I had more time when I was there. My wife wanted to see that house flippin place that was on TV. Not even on TV any more. We heard there was tremendous damage from a previous hurricane. I did get a pretty good book, Ghosts of Charleston. It will freak you out. |

We have friends who live in Charleston, who always give us an open invitation. I don't think I could live down there, but it is one of my favorite places to visit.
Shem Creek and Hyman's Sea Food are some great places to dine. The lax alcohol laws are also refreshing.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed they call me and say Charleston. That's how much I love that town. |

The OPM is actually doing my background investigation as we speak (investigator started yesterday here in Tampa) so hopefully my case is adjudicated in the next month or so and then I just have to sit tight and wait for the call. |
