I just signed up for Facebook, first time in my life and I was surprised that it knew ex-gf's that I dated from even over 5 years ago.

How the hell did they do that???

It does something similar to me, recommends a coworker as a friend, even though I have no coworker from my company or other friends in common with this person.

Ok, if you fill out your profile, school, class, work, etc... it matches you with people with similar profiles as well as friends of friends etc...

I didn't fill out the profile with any personal info.

do you have any friends?

it will suggest people to you who are mutual friends of your friends.  (IE: You have two friends, they are both friends with person x...facebook recommends person x to you as a friend.)

You constantly get reminders to add that person you hated in HS and never talked to, but all your friends did....lol.

Did you become part of any networks?

I just signed up in the last few months, and there were people already waiting for me based on my email addy.... considering I've had the same one since '99, it was quite a few people.  Pissed the wife off that I'd passed her up in "friends" when she'd been on a year, and me two weeks.  Wow, I feel so cool, and my e-penis grew by 10nm that day.

When you type in your email address, there's a little check box that says something like "find friends from my address book."  it will search your address book for Facebook members.  it will also find your address in other peoples address books.

It uses info from the email account that you are registered with. My lawyer showed up in my suggested friends list right after I hired her and started trading emails.  This before I actually saved saved her contact info to my address book.

I just signed up after receiving a "friend request" from a few aqaintances. I have a feeling I am going to regret this Facebook BS.

Maybe they listed you in their profile as a "boyfriend"? You don't have to be a member to list them. Then you join with the same name, bam.

More than that, Facebook has already searched your ex-girlfriend's contacts and stored your email address from there, so that as soon as you signed up, she will see you as a "suggestion".

Yeah. Ask me how I know about that.

go to privacy settings and you can block people from even finding you in a search.  I got a friend request from some "different" chick tonight.   Not that I wouldnt mind e- bang'n her, but Im afraid she'll give me a computer virus.  I hit ignore before the wife seen the request.
