I love the show, but give up the shitty fucking American jokes.

I honestly believe he's a closet American, and he does the jokes in good fun.

If you've watched long enough, and read enough of his writing, he really HATES the nanny state there with a vitriol that would make Thomas Jefferson blush.

He bashes his homeland way more often than the US.

I don't mind the jokes, and the car porn more than makes up for it!

Yeah it bugged me too at first.  But as you watch more you find that he does indeed rip on other Europeans and the British just as much if not more so than Americans.  Just watch some of the episodes where they go on motoring trips through Europe.

Don't worry, he'll be moving out of the UK like 200,000 of his countrymen do per year.

Something tells me if the tax climate were made more condusive here he would move here once Top Gear wraps.  He really seems to hate theEnglish nanny state.

That show is just Benny Hill with cars. 'OhmiGod the camper caught on fire, and no we did not stage it!" 'Ohmigod hillbillies are chasing us, and we didn't stage it!' Every "race' whether it's car vs. parachutist, jet boat or tobaggon is "this close." If they raced the space shuttle they would "just barely lose." wink wink. Still it's amusing and the older balding guy busts on everyone. The other old guy needs a haircut.

Tivo is a necessity for zooming past whatever weird gay guys are racing the econobox this week.

I downloaded the Vietnam special (took motorcycles the length of the Nam) there was a good bit of US joke and bashing and a Yankee bike they would have to ride if their bike broke down. Honestly it bothered me a little because it somewhat disrespectful to the vets who fought there but I love the show, there is definatley Karma in this world because Clarkson was riding into Ha Long(sp) City and saying "I am boldly going where no American has gone before" literally 2 seconds latter he wrecked his Vespa scooter and got pertty banged up

I thinks it's all in good fun though, and if you haven't seen the Vietnam special, download it it's well worth it

But he sure as fuck hates the Nanny State.......

Best episode was when he was playing with that Eastern Bloc SUV.... He reaches for the cigarette lighter and then states that it's a crying shame that he can't smoke in a vehicle in his own country.

He makes fun of everything and everyone but he really does hate the Socialist State that the UK and Europe has become....

I just watched the episode where they drive 750 miles on one tank of fuel. He wore a hi-vis vest for the entire leg of the trip across France (because France requires you keep one in your car at all times).

It's refreshing to watch for that very reason.  Seems like everybody else on TeeVee wants more and more .gov. . .JC, like most of us, just wants to be left alone.

He is very conservative and is right in line with much of what we think. He is however also very proud of his own country and like man peole of that variety he likes to bag on other countries. I bag on the UK so don't mind it when he does.

I do find his hate for Ferraris/Porsches kind of funny because he has a big bias towards Lambo which he bought awhile back.

If your trade was automobile journalism, your respect for the United States in the context of your profession would be justifiably low.  Excepting China and India we make the worlds worst cars.

Re the "free world" comment:  It's also widely known that the United States has the most stringent, overreaching and absurd, laws and regulations over the automobile industry.  In most countries if you want to buy a particular car, all you need is money.  Here, each imported vehicle has to comply with thousands of meaningless emissions and safety requirements that force manufacturers to sell cars that have mass appeal [read mainstream].  This is sacrilege to any auto enthusiast.

The DOT makes no sense; I can go out and buy 1100cc bullet bike with their full blessing ,but I can't buy a diesel powered 4wd toyota utility vehicle because "it does not meet DOT safety standard."

They bash the hell out of everyone who cares, and at the end of the day they all own at least one Ford anyway

Plus you can always count of them to crowbar in as much machine guns /excessive explosions/ Ah-64s/Typhoons/ full scale Royal Marine beach assaults as humanly possible which is always nice.

Random question, is James May gay? In the episode where they take the race prepped 3 series and enter it into an SCCA type club endurance race, the three of them have their names and flags up on the window. I could of swore that Clarkson and hamster both had a UK flag and that May had the fruity rainbow flag deal. Did anyone else catch this, or maybe it was just a joke anyway?

Pretty much.  However, the Ford Fusion in Europe is similar to a Honda Accord here.   I would gladly drive a diesel-powered fusion/focus made there over here.

As for May, those three give each other so much grief it's not even funny.  I have a feeling it was one of Clarkson's 'very dry' jokes.

They constantly screw with James May...according to wikipedia he's got a partner who's a lady.

Even if he were gay, honestly, I wouldn't care. He's so ...essential to the fabric and chemistry to the show that it just doesn't matter; it works as it is.

If you get a chance, download the first two seasons of Top Gear Extra (what it was when Clarkson re-launched it, after the preivous Top Gear/Fifth Gear split thingie)...

They had a different 3rd presenter in the first season, and May came on for the second season. It was literally as if someone flipped a light switch on between the seasons...it just worked much, much better with May.

The unedited versions are usually around an hour without commercials. On BBC America they run for an hour WITH commercials (so they do edit out 10-15 minutes of material for BBC America).

James May being possibly gay has been a long running joke on the show. As has Hammond being short or having his teeth whitened. Clarkson is just treated as an idiot.

If you pay attention, in most episodes there is something in the background, making fun of something.

If you've seen any of the recent episodes, the one where they pretend to be 16 and buying a car, watch closely when they are in the office on the phone. Stig sticks his head in the copy machine, tooth whitener sitting on Hammonds desk, picture of that gay dude from last season that Clarkson got all chummy with on his desk, May has a framed picture of the queen. Stack of gold bars on a shelf.

IMO, Top Gear is THE best show on TV. Even the edited American version is great.
